All in all, she looked good, which was going to be helpful. She just hoped Najeddine bought it.

“You look stunning,” Lacy said as she came into the room behind her.

“Thanks. You, too. That purple really sets off your eyes.”

Lacy smiled. “He won’t know what hit him.”

“Let’s hope so. Najeddine better be distracted, or this whole thing falls apart.”

“I was talking about Hawk.”

She met Lacy’s gaze in the mirror. “I…”

“Did you think we didn’t notice? We teased you this morning about the sex, but it’s easy to see there’s something real between you two. Hawk has been super protective of you. And you only seem to really relax when he’s in the room.”

Heat rushed up her cheeks. “It was his job to keep me safe. That’s why he’s protective. He’s worried I will do something stupid. Again.”

She snorted. “Is that what he’s selling you? Don’t believe a word of it. That man cares about you, very much if I’m not mistaken. That’s a good thing. Hawk is truly one of the good guys.”

Remy’s stomach rolled, and her heart rate ticked up. She didn’t need this now. She needed himnotto care about her. She didn’t want to care about him either.Too fucking late. She had no idea what the future would bring. Hell, she didn’t even know if she’d be alive after tonight. Anything could happen. She didn’t want Hawk worrying about her, or worse, doing something stupid to protecther. Just the thought of Hawk getting hurt made her feel physically ill.

She took a deep breath. Lacy was wrong. She and Hawk were done now. They’d had their fun, but tonight would determine the rest of her life in so many ways. She would not be distracted by anything, not even Hawk.

She smiled at Lacy through the mirror. “Let’s do this.”

Thirty minutes later, they were pulling up in front of the Museum of Art with Gunnar behind the wheel of the Escalade. Logan had introduced him earlier and told her that Gunnar was one of the best. She hoped that was true since he would be the getaway driver if everything went to shit.

“You ready?” Alex asked.

“As I’ll ever be.”

Alex smiled. “You’re gonna be fine. You’ll knock him dead in that dress. Trust me.” She adjusted her vest and pants. She’d added glasses and a red wig. Remy wouldn’t have recognized her at all if she didn’t know who she was.

Lacy leaned over and brushed a piece of lint off Alex’s shoulder. “You look awesome. Now, remember, we are just here for the key,” she said, staring directly at Alex.

Remy frowned. “Er, what’s going on?”

“As we told you, Alex is a master thief, and she can get distracted when she’s around pretty things, like the paintings in the museum. I’m trying to make sure she’s not going to steal anything else while we’re here.”

“Would I do that?” Alex asked, trying to look innocent.

Lacy snorted. “If you thought you could get away with it, yep. In a heartbeat.”

Alex laughed. “Okay, you got me. I would be tempted to steal one of the pictures that I happen to know was stolen from its rightful owner but,” she said and turned to Remy, “tonight is all about Remy, and I won’t do anything to jeopardize that.” She reached out and squeezed Remy’s hand. “None of us will.”

Lacy looked out the car window. “Do you see the guys?”

“ Hawk is standing by the door with Logan,” Gunnar said.

“I see him,” Remy said. “I guess it’s time to go.”

Gunnar got out of the car and hurried around to open their door. Lacy got out first and then Remy. “Thanks, Gunnar,” she said. “Wish me luck.”.

“Good luck. You won’t need it. You’ve got one of the best teams on the planet with you and may I say you are looking damn fine to boot,” he said with a wink, and she giggled.

“Good luck,” Alex said from the back of the car before Gunnar shut the door.

Remy secured her black cloak more tightly around herself. The store had sent it over with the dresses to try on, and she’d fallen in love with it. It was mystical and romantic somehow to turn up in a cloak, like one of those old-fashioned mystery movies set in Victorian times. She glanced around and laughed a little to herself. The temperature had warmed up, and the snow on the ground was creating a low-level fog. It was just like the movies.
