It was like someone punched him. He didn't understand. They had a spectacular time together and got along better than anyone he'd known. Why wouldn't she want to see him again?

He opened his mouth and snapped it shut, processing her words. He was confused. "I don't understand. Did you not have fun? I thought you enjoyed yourself."

"I did." She nodded her head. "I had a wonderful time. Really, the trip was spectacular."

He frowned. "Then why don't you want to go on another date?"

Ellie sighed once more and spoke up in a less gentle tone than the first time. "Because I don't see the relationship going anywhere. I don't see us having a future together, and I'd rather not waste your time."

He was blown away. Where had that occurred? When had she started thinking about this?

He ran his hands through his hair, trying to stay calm. He didn't understand where he had gone wrong. Didn't every woman want to be swept off her feet? Had he not just done that?

He ran his hands through his hair again and turned, rubbing at his face. He turned back to her. "I thought everything went well. Better than well. Geez, we even slept together."

While he knew that wasn't an indicator, he figured she wasn't someone to just sleep with another person on the first date if she didn't think it was going anywhere. Had he been wrong?

"It was fun," she said. "I had a great time. The hotel was amazing, the tours were outstanding, but overall, it was fine."

It was like another punch to the gut. He inhaled sharply. "Do you not feel the spark between us? Because I sure do. I thought you had to."

"Yes, but …"

He waved a hand cutting her off. He didn't think she needed to finish. "Then it sounds like we have plenty to work with. You don't seriously want to call it quits on the first date. That's like going to a new restaurant and not trying the food."

She scowled, clearly growing a little irritated. "You're telling me what I want then?" she snapped, and he was taken aback. He was so used to being in charge that he truly didn't know how to handle this kind of conversation. "Are you planning on moving here?"

The question struck him, and he needed a second, but she didn't allow it. She crossed her arms, more bite behind her words. "Do you want to settle down? Put down roots here in Scaramouche?"

"God, no!" he said without a second to think about it. "I would never. Jesus. I couldn't possibly stay in this place that long. This place is bland and as ordinary as you can get."

Ellie's eyes darkened. "What were you exactly expecting from me, Mason? Did you think I'd give up my life here to travel and read books with you? Did you think I'd just throw my life aside for someone I hardly know?"

He frowned. Maybe he did think she'd like the idea. He always heard about how people hate working. Maybe she'd be okay with traveling and being with him. Maybe she wanted to see the world.

"I thought maybe you'd be happy with traveling. Why not?" He shrugged. "You wouldn't have to stress about work ever."

He meant for it to be a good thing, but she glared at him, angry now. She started to yell.

"Because that's not a life I want," she said, livid now, throwing her hands up. "Do you see that? If you don't want to settle down and I don't want to live a life of traveling, we are incompatible. So why waste time when there is no future here?" She turned and started to walk with her bag to the front of her door.

"Ellie, wait a second."

She didn't. She walked up her steps to the front door and unlocked it. She turned to him as she opened it. "It was nice spending time with you in London. Goodbye, Mason."

The door slammed, and his arms dropped. What the fuck just happened?

He stood there for a second, waiting to see if she'd come back out, but she didn't. The door remained closed, and he stood alone.

He turned and drove himself back to the airport. He wasn't staying in that town a second longer. There was no point.

Getting on his plane, he asked for a scotch. He downed it before requesting two more. He needed to calm his mind.

The plane took off, and he stared outside, angry. He had done everything right. So what if he didn't want to set down his roots here? That wasn't terrible. He knew lots of people that traveled. He knew people that were married and spent tons of time apart.

And what was so wrong with maybe her not going back to work? If he had more than enough money, that wasn't an issue. They would live a high life together.

He asked for another scotch feeling himself growing frustrated. In fact, he snapped at the cabin attendant to just bring him the whole bottle.
