I ignore his grouchy behavior. I’m used to it at shift change. That’s partly why I take the long route some nights. Just to get under his skin.

“Anything to report?” I ask.

Worry lines crease his forehead, and he frowns. “I had to wake her. She was screaming in her sleep again.”

“Another nightmare?” I rock back on my heels nervously.

“Yeah, I think they are getting worse.”

I nod. “I’ll take it from here. Get some rest.”

He pats me on the shoulder and takes off.

We’ve all been worried about her lately. None of us are sure how to handle it, but we try our best.

Robyn

Walking through the damp forest, I get an eerie feeling that I’m being watched. I glance over my shoulder to see if my guards are nearby, but there’s no one there.

“Hellooo!” I shout into the darkness, but no one responds. “Grey! Tristan! Dominic! Callum! Where the hell are you? This isn’t funny.”

The sound of tree limbs snapping and the forest crackling in the night has me spooked. My feet move faster, trying to find my way out of this place, but there’s no use.

I’m completely lost.

Nothing looks familiar.

I look up to the sky to find the moon, hoping it would help me get a sense of direction to get the hell out of here, but the tall, willowy trees above are blocking my view.

There’s a branch snapping in the distance that has my head swinging around. My eyes dart from left to right, checking for any movement, but the darkness makes it hard to see.

The crows hiding in the branches above my head begin to caw, sending chills down my spine.

“Guys, this isn’t funny. Please, come out.”

The darkness surrounds me as a hooded figure steps out into the open. The long, dark cloak conceals the person’s identity.

“What do you want?” My voice trembles as the figure slowly walks toward me. For every step they take, I take two back. “My guards will be here any moment. So I suggest you reveal yourself or go on about your way.”

Still no response.

The caws grow louder as the figure closes the distance between us. There’s a shift in the air, sending goosebumps all over my body.

If I turn and run, will they chase me? I have no weapon except the fallen limbs on the ground to protect myself.

A crow swoops down, almost hitting my head, then another and another until they’re everywhere.

The decision is easy.

Run.

I spin on my heels, running away from the birds and the shadow man as fast as I can.

The crows begin their assault, flying down, pecking at my flesh with their beaks. Tearing at my dress and ripping the top to shreds.
