Fuck Rami!

No.

Just no.

My brother refuses to look me in the eye, but he sees me. He knows I’m here. That I’m watching this all unfold, but he doesn’t dare look in my direction.

The queen dowager is to his left with her hand placed on his shoulder. “All hail the king!” she chants. The crowded room shouts back, “All hail the king!”

I choke on my own breath. Nausea swirling in the pits of my stomach, threatening to release its contents. My chest heaves as I try to swallow air that isn’t quite reaching my lungs. It’s hollow. The void in my chest grows wider.

The hand on the small of my back does nothing to comfort me, but as I close my eyes, I realize they are with me.

Fighting back the tears threatening to fall, I look around the room. Not sure what I’m searching for. A sign of something—anything.

Is my father dead?

Why did no one come for me? To let me know what was happening?

“Princess Robyn, thank you for joining us. Come.” Ramiro stands, holding his hand out, waiting for me to take it.

My feet stay planted to the ground. One of my guards nudges me from behind, clearing his throat. I turn my head to see the four of them, standing tall, readying themselves for what’s to come. I look closely and find the same fear-stricken look hidden in their eyes. The same fear that’s flowing through my veins as I try to figure out what to do.

My father warned me, this was coming. I just didn’t realize how quickly things would unfold.

Dominic leans forward, his words a whisper for my ears only, “You must go, Princess.”

“Stay calm. We’ll figure the rest when we leave here.” Callum’s voice barely registers over the growing ring invading my ears.

I nod, slowly turning back and making my way down the aisle.

As I reach the steps, Rami takes my hand, leading me up to a chair on the right side of the throne. He doesn’t meet my eye. He pauses as he releases my hand, but without looking up, he turns back to address the crowd.

“Our father, King Rian, has left this world to be with our ancestors in the afterlife. As his heir, it is my duty to inform his people of our great loss. My father was a great man, his presence will surely be missed throughout IronHaven.”

“All hail the king!” The crowd chants in sorrow.

I can no longer hold back the tears, swiping them away as quickly as they fall.

My father is gone, and I have to find out with the rest of our people. It’s cruel and unjust. My brother should have known better. Hedoesknow better.

Looking to my brother, anger, hurt, and confusion fill me.Why Rami? Why are you going about things all wrong?

My brother couldn’t even give me the courtesy of telling me in private. No, he wanted me to appear weak in front of our people.

To mourn in their presence.

To grieve my father in a room of strangers.

My skin prickles with fury. If this is how you want to play things Rami, then game on.

Humiliate me in front of our people, and I’ll do the same, brother.

“Thank you, brother,” I interrupt, standing abruptly, stepping forward to address the room myself.

I refuse to sit back and allow this to happen.

“Like many of you, I’m greatly saddened by this news. For whatever reason,” my eyes cut to Rami then back to the crowd. “I am only now finding out about the king’s death.” The people gasp in outrage and start to whisper among themselves.
