More lies.

The queen dowager steps up to face me.

“Are you suggesting treason? I surely hope not. That would be very foolish of you. This is not a battle you can win, Princess.” She raises her chin, daring me to continue. But before I can respond, Dominic steps through the crowd, coming to my side and placing a hand on my arm.

“We need to go, Princess. The people cannot see the two of you fighting out in the open like this. It will start an uprising,” he says, pulling me through the doors.

Robyn

As soon as we are out of the throne room, I jerk my arm from his grasp. “Maybe an uprising is what we need. Did you stop to think of that?”

“When has a revolt ever been good for any kingdom in any realm, Princess? Don’t worry, I’ll wait.” Tristan rolls his eyes with a smug look on his face. “This isn’t the time or place to have this discussion. We have eyes and ears on all of us right now. Let’s get back to your chambers.” Greyson steps in.

If there’s one thing I’m sure of right now, it’s that we have no idea who is in my grandmother’s pocket, and I’m not willing to risk my life to find out.

I hate him, but he’s right. I glance around the room, and all eyes are on us, instead of responding, I storm off toward my chambers. They don’t know what I know. There’s war coming whether we like it or not. There’s no escaping what the seer foretold.

Dominic slams the doors to my chambers behind us, frightening Cyra who’s too busy tidying up to notice us entering the room.

She looks up from where she stands and rushes over, pulling me into her arms. “I’m so sorry. I just heard about the king, Robyn. You must be devastated,” she breathes. I allow her to hold me for a few beats before pulling away.

A normal person would have time to grieve, but that is not the case here. Instead, I push away all the sadness I’m feeling to figure out our next move.

I have no doubt, my grandmother is already ten steps ahead of us, and I hate playing catch up.

“Actually, Cyra, I just learned about his passing moments ago with the rest of the IronHaven.” She gasps, throwing a hand over her mouth.

My guard is pacing the room. “I want to see my father’s body,” I say to them. The severity of the situation hasn’t hit me yet, and I doubt it will, given the way my brother delivered the news. I need to see the king for myself.

Dominic steps forward, taking my hand and leading me away from the others. “Do you trust Cyra?” he asks with a look of concern.

“With my life. She’s been my lady-in-waiting for as long as I can remember,” I respond.

“That doesn’t answer my question, Princess,” he says, staring into my eyes. There’s a storm brewing behind his gaze. I straighten my shoulders and give him a nod.

Accepting my response, he turns, shoveling out instructions. “Cyra, I need you to prepare a small bag for Lady Robyn. Just a few articles of clothing and any other necessities she may need.”

Cyra’s eyes widen in shock at the request. “Are you going somewhere, My Lady? Do I need to pack my own things for traveling?” she asks curiously.

“No, just a bag for the Princess. That will be all,” he instructs.

Cyra hesitates looking between Dominic and me, so I lower my head slightly giving her the okay. She bows gracefully as ever, then leaves the room. When the doors close behind her, Dominic takes me by surprise, wrapping his arms around me. “What the prince did to you wasn’t right,” he breathes into the side of my head.

My body goes slack in his embrace, soaking up every ounce of comfort he’s offering me. I nuzzle my head in his chest, hoping if I push hard enough, I might be able to bury myself inside him.

The tears I’ve been holding back, flow freely. He’s a mountain of muscle, but there’s a softness in his touch I never knew was there. The way he holds me tells me he wishes he could take away all my pain. And for some odd reason, I let myself believe that.

I stay wrapped in his warm embrace for several minutes before it hits me.

“King. R-Rami is the king now,” I stutter.

“Prince Ramiro is not the heir. You are. Your father said as much. We need to find Lord Osbirth and retrieve the king’s declaration before it’s too late,” Greyson says from behind me, clearly, determined to obey the king’s wishes.

Dominic releases me from his arms, and I release a heavy sigh from my lungs. Before I know it, I find myself pacing the room. We need to figure out a plan to get me out of this marriage without alerting my brother and grandmother.
