Callum laughs manically, preparing himself for Grey’s attack. He snakes his hand out, gliding it over my hip and pushing me behind him. Ready to protect me with his life.

By the scowl on Greyson’s face, it’s Cal who needs protecting.

I’m not scared of Greyson. He swore an oath to protect me, along with the others, and they hold that oath above everything. But if looks could kill, Callum and I would be six feet under.

“Greyson!” Dominic shouts with a crack through the air, his words falling on deaf ears. Greyson ignores him, picking up his pace. He’s blocked the rest of us out as he sets his sight on Callum.

I try shrugging Cal off to move around him. Hopefully blocking Greyson’s attack, knowing he won’t hurt me, but Cal’s grip tightens, holding me in place at his back.

“He won’t hurt me, Cal,” I whisper just as Callum scoffs and throws his head back laughing. He steps up to meet his opponent.

Grey swings fast but wide, giving Cal enough time to duck out of the way. He pops up and smashes his fist against Grey’s jaw. The hit causes Grey to stumble, but he quickly shakes it off and pounces on Cal.

The two of them end up rolling around in the dirt, trading punches.

Dominic leans against a tree with his arms crossed and his face set in disappointment as he watches them go at it. But he makes no attempt to stop them. He almost looks bored, which pisses me off.

I hate this.

No longer wanting to watch the two of them beat the hell out of one another, I step forward to break it up myself, but I’m forced to a stop as Tristan jumps down from a tree to intercede.

He plants his hand firmly against my chest, shaking his head. “Let them handle this,” he snarks.

Frustrated, I swat his hand away, taking another step toward Cal. Tristan quickly recovers, wrapping his arms around my waist, lifting me off the ground, and carrying me away from the fight.

“Stop! Put me down! Cal was only coming to my defense, don’t let him get hurt over this,” I shout, struggling to wiggle out of his grasp.

Tristan sets me on my feet, grabs my jaw, and forces me to look into his piercing blue eyes.

“We took a vow to bleed for you, little bird. This is no different.” His words send me stumbling back in shock. I know the oath they took to protect me, but this is absurd.

My hand reaches out, clutching his muscular arm. “Please, Tris,” I beg.

He lets out a loud huff, shakes his head, then stalks back to the men.

Before I have a chance to blink, the fight is over.

Tristan steps forward, placing his hands under Grey’s arms, throwing him off of Callum. As a smile forms on my lips, he drops down, placing a knee on Callum’s throat, cutting off his air supply.

My chest seizes with panic as Callum begins struggling under his weight, but it doesn’t last long. Just enough time for Tristan to make them both feel like fools.

“We have a job to do, and the two of you bickering like little girls makes us all look bad. Figure your shit out on your own time,” Tristan commands, standing tall over the other two men. “Everyone get back to work. Princess, you’re with me.”

My breath hitches at his stern demand, but my body follows, welcoming a sudden change of pace.

I look down at my calloused fingers, feeling the ache and soreness of my muscles creeping in, but I won’t let that stop me now.

My mission is clear. I will continue to push myself harder every day for the sake of my father and the kingdom.

We head back to the target as my thoughts turn to the danger my father, King Rian II, is facing.

The week prior, he sent a raven to my guard, instructing them to begin training me for combat. His order was ominous and sent an eerie feeling over us all, but with my father away, there was no questioning him on this.
