The touch of his skin against mine sends a shiver through me. I see Cyra’s eyes darting between the two of us anxiously.

“Cyra, can you give us a moment with the princess?” She huffs but turns and stalks away down the hall.

His eyes search the corridor as he moves closer, stepping directly into my space. There’s so much left unspoken between us.

He leans forward, his voice low and uncertain. “If anything goes sideways, we want you to head straight for the stables, Princess. We prepared Koa and the other horses this morning. Don’t think, just run.”

“Today will be fine,” I say to him, trying to ease the tension in his body. There’s a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach. “It’s tomorrow that worries me,” I tell him.

“Then tomorrow, we will do the same. And the day after that. Whatever it takes to make sure you feel safe.” My hand moves gently over his cheek as I gaze into his eyes. Someone clears their throat, and I quickly snap it back to my side, realizing what I did out in the open for all to witness.

Dom grins, shaking his head at me. “The horses will be saddled, watered, and fed. We don’t have many options here. We’re outnumbered, Princess.” My eyes close for a moment, and when I open them, his gaze burns all throughout me. Dom isn’t trying to scare me, only protect me in the only way he knows how. We have no idea who our allies are or if we even have any, so if he says this is my one way out, then I’ll take his word.

“I hear you, Dom. Let’s get this over with,” I say to him. We turn and walk toward a frustrated Cyra. Her arms are crossed over her chest as she stands with her hip popped out, tapping her foot impatiently.

“Was that necessary?” she scolds Dom as we approach.

He shrugs his shoulders. “It was to me.”

With a sigh, she moves to the closed door of the throne room. Tristan cuts her off, his hand hovering over the handle as he meets my gaze. “Deep breath, little bird.”

I nod, sucking in as much oxygen to my lungs as they will allow before releasing it, then I repeat a few times to clear my head.

I push my shoulders back, holding my head high. “I’m ready.”

He opens the doors, and we step through as a unit. Everyone’s eyes are on me the moment we enter the room. The whispers pick up instantly.

Cyra bounces excitedly on her heels with joy at my side. I lift my eyes, searching the room to see what’s caught her attention.

My breath is trapped in my lungs when I find it... or better yet, him. King Naveen.

A tall, broad-shouldered man with short, dark hair stands next to my brother with a crown placed upon his head. The two of them turn toward us as we enter the room.

My brother grins, waving me over. King Naveen tilts his head, and his black, soulless eyes cut right through me.

He looks younger than I’d imagined, in his thirties if I had to guess. There’s no gray streaking his hair yet, but the frown lines creasing his forehead say he’s been through things. Things that leave permanent scars on your face for the whole realm to see.

I watch him closely. His face was set in stone when he was speaking to Rami, but the closer my feet carry me to him, the more it softens.

His gaze turns from me to Cyra, tongue grazing over his lips as he takes her in, lust filling his eyes. He doesn’t even try to hide it.

His eyes shift back to me, he chuckles when he realizes he was caught staring at my lady-in-waiting.

Just wonderful. Match made in heaven the pair of us.

I’ll spend my days fawning over my guard while he lusts after my lady. What a great marriage this will be.

My feet stop in front of him and Rami.

“Ah, Princess Robyn, you’ve finally decided to grace us with your presence,” Rami sneers, and I cut my eyes, leveling him with a glare.

“This is your soon to be husband, King Naveen of Morose,” he continues.

I stiffen, glancing at the king, who looks amused. He steps forward, holding his hand out to greet me. The moment my palm touches his, he pulls me into him, placing a kiss to my cheek.

My body steels at his unwanted touch, and suddenly I feel someone at my back.

The king and I both look over my shoulder to find Dominic at my side, and three sets of heated eyes on me. A shudder runs down my spine.
