He bit down slightly, which he hadn’t planned on doing, and felt instantly regretful. But she purred back at him, having clearly enjoyed the slightly kinky bonus.

They both stood in the dimly lit room, brains on fire with pleasure, and held each other until both came down from the clouds.

ELEVEN

RHIANNON

Rhi woke as the light from the sunrise poured through the blinds of Mars’s bedroom. They had eventually ended up in his bed after fucking on the couch, taking a shower together, and then rolling around once more when she tried getting dressed to leave. They’d fucked slowly and tenderly with much less desperation than the first time in the living room.

Rhi had her experience of one-night stands, a handful, which were often disappointing for women. They had been calculated risks when she was in law school, using the men as methods of tension release, which really hadn’t done much for her anyway. She usually wound up going home and finishing herself, which eventually made her swear off one-night stands altogether.

But her time with Mars was … different. What was even odder was the connection she felt to him, how she gravitated toward parts of his body where she intuitively knew he liked being touched, and how he did the same for her, considering that it was all the first time.

She was naked in his massive king-sized bed, feeling his strong arm resting across her body. The sound of his breathing was angelic, her memory of the previous night's indulgence making her body quiver under the satin sheets.

She was willing to admit to herself that she indeed did not want this to be a one-night stand. She was smart enough to realize, judging by the way Mars had treated her outside and inside, that he wanted more than some short fling.

Rhi peered at the clock on the wall, one that used Roman numerals to look vintage, and remembered she had a meeting in an hour. She groaned quietly to herself, wishing she could spend the day in bed with the gorgeous man who had pleased her in ways no one ever had.

She lifted his arm gently off her stomach, then rose from the bed. She had spotted a glossy robe the night before and crept forward in the nude so as not to wake her lover from his slumber. After placing it on, she slipped out of the bedroom and into the opulent hallway.

Rhi hadn’t had the chance the night before to get a good look at the stunning mansion Mars called home. She had briefly observed the foyer, the living room, and of course, the main suite and bathroom, but judging by the height of the ceiling and the length of the hallway, there was a lot more to explore.

Rhi tightened the robe around her waist and slowly began to pad down what looked like the palace of a dreamer. She made an average amount of money as a lawyer, but most of her work was pro bono, which meant she basically worked for charity. She didn’t mind and considered herself lucky when she glanced into the lives of those she served who were less fortunate.

Walking through Mars's home was like walking through what she imagined was the modern version of where the queen of England lived … high ceilings and gothic-looking wallpaper in a shade of navy blue. The floor was glistening hardwood. There were paintings on the walls that she stepped past, ones that she recognized as famous pieces by Monet and Renoir. It was impressive, especially considering the fact that they just might be originals.

Rhi thought she was starting to get lost as she arrived at a carpeted staircase, which appeared to trail down into the foyer area she had recalled from the night before. She placed a hand on the railing that appeared to be made of some expensive black marble, marveling at the crimson shade of carpeting that ran down the center of the steps when a hand touched her lower back.

“Boo.”

She shook, feeling foolish, as she turned and slapped a hand on her chest.

The sight of Mars in the morning was a vision. His neatly coiffed dark hair had been replaced by an untidy mess of locks, his piercing eyes brighter than the dawn that seeped through the velvet drapes.

He looked like a little boy who had raced home through a rainstorm. It made him even more endearing to her.

“Just damn,” she muttered with a grin. “How dare you scare me in your own home.”

Mars smiled, and Rhi instantly melted. He touched her shoulders with affection as he chuckled a response.

“I’m so sorry, darling. I’ve been known to move around rather quietly.”

“Like a cat or something,” Rhi replied. She wallowed in his touch, which still managed to warm every cell in her body despite it being over the silk robe.

He winked at her reply, then curled his tongue briefly over his bottom lip.

“Or something like that,” he said playfully.

Mars pulled her gently into his arms, and she let herself go. He wrapped his thick limbs around her, held her against his chest, and cocooned her, her smaller body nearly lost in the mountains of his ample muscularity.

She felt serene standing there, feeling him running a hand through her hair while the other settled on her back. Any source of stress trickled out of her pores when he held her. It was a dangerous feeling for relaxation to come so easily with someone you barely knew.

“What do you think of the place?”

Her head was tucked under his chin like a child, and Rhi had her eyes closed. She opened them when he spoke, feeling abruptly self-conscious about the vulnerable position she had fallen in.

“It’s … overwhelming,” she said, rising from his chest. “I don’t think I’ve ever been inside a real mansion before.”
