Mars held onto her wrists as she tried to subtly move away. His touch was casual and constant, like they had been together for a much longer time period than the few weeks they’d known one another.

“I had it custom built. I wanted something that reflected my interests and personality.”

Rhi gazed around the top of the staircase, the ceiling that was partly made of glass the color of church windows, a kaleidoscopic paradox.

She let him hold onto her as she raised an eyebrow. She hoped it did something to him, as a single look sure did something to her.

“So all of this … is a reflection of you?”

He nodded with a smile.

“Keep exploring,” he remarked. “I want you to know everything about me. Every corner, even the ugly bits.”

Rhi felt a growing sense of intimacy inside her heart that was attached like a long line of string to Mars. It was a new, refreshing feeling that also scared the shit out of her.

It was his willingness to be seen, to be known, and his own opening up that made her feel exposed. She had never felt comfortable enough with anyone to show her entire true self.

So, to protect herself, she gazed around the room, his tender look lingering and making her feel disarmed.

“What time is it?” she asked casually.

Mars lifted a wrist to look at his watch.

“Nearly 9:30.”

Rhi genuinely did want to stay with him all day, exploring each other's dreams and bodies until twilight and beyond. But she had a meeting at 10:30 that she couldn’t miss. She wasn’t going to let her affection for a man get in the way of a career she had fought hard and long for.

Not yet, anyway.

“Shit,” she said, pulling her hands away from him. “I’ve got a meeting in an hour. I’m sorry, Mars, I can’t miss it.”

His smile never left his gorgeous face.

“It’s not a problem, honey. Let’s get dressed, and I can drive you back home. I insist.”

They both dressed hastily, with Rhi starting to feel flushed at the sight of Mars’s bare chest and that sneaky smile he gave her when she adjusted her bra.

It was nearly impossible not to tackle him with her mouth, but, alas, her convictions were stronger. He escorted her back to his goblin-green sports car and sped her home, dropping her off with a deep, sexy kiss.

It nearly took Rhi’s breath away, but she played it cool. Her hands moved up his chest as they parted, feeling like a schoolgirl with her first crush.

“I can’t wait to see you again,” he whispered.

Rhi eventually peeled herself away from him, telling him that she, too, was counting down the days until the moment of their reunion.

She trekked up to her apartment and had a cold shower. This wasn’t her usual ritual in the morning, but she needed to shake off the lava of desire flowing through her bones. The thoughts of Mars's mouth on hers, his lovely cock inside her, made her groan as the water smashed against her warm skin.

Rhi tried to distract herself by getting a nice suit ready for her important meeting; it was a sleek black pant-and-blazer combo, and the blouse beneath was a charcoal gray that sat tastefully at her collarbone. She didn’t have time to straighten her hair, so she brushed it out, using hair spray to keep up a neat ponytail.

With a quick glance in the mirror before heading down to her car, she carried her black heels so she could gun it in her running shoes.

There was less traffic than Rhi anticipated, which was good. On the way, she listened to her usual morning news podcast, which kept her updated about the latest ongoings in the city. It was something she relied on to get into the zone of her work personality, which was shaken that morning but in the most titillating way.

But the second she pressed play, a single story kept repeating itself, and it was one that made her gut wrench.

The newscaster spoke about a particularly gruesome animal attack that had taken place just outside the building of her firm. She squeezed the steering wheel as the reporter detailed that the creature had brutally killed multiple wild animals in the city, leaving an ominous scene of laid-out corpses along the cityscape.

Rhi instantly felt her body surge with anxiety. For some reason, she felt herself connecting to the occurrence in the same way she had linked to the death of the woman who looked an awful lot like her too. It was a little bit absurd, but it was just a feeling; she wasn’t going to let it go there.
