They were both on the edge of a cataclysmic eruption as Rhi pressed her head to Mars’s forehead, with Mars taking her ass cheeks in both hands and using them as leverage to slam into her pussy.

Rhi’s eyes were closed, her mouth open, and her expression was that of an approaching rapture. Feeling Mars’s cock slam into her along with his titanium grip on her ass cheeks, his warm breath and deep voice rumbling her name unfolded every insecurity into a blossoming rose.

It all happened, right on that terrace, as she called out his name, rolling against him as loud and hectic as the thunder beyond. He held her tightly as he rebased himself, too, letting out the loudest roar she’d ever heard from him. They rolled against each other, absorbing the pleasure, the fluids, and the growing sense of certainty and trust.

Mars repeated her name over and over, fluttering her neck and chest with kisses as drops of rain began to blow sideways. She giggled in a way she had never heard herself laugh before, feeling Mars’s lips on her.

“You are incredible,” Mars whispered, out of breath. “How did I get so lucky?”

Her entire body flooded with affection. She wrapped her arms around Mars's head, kissing him back, feeling the spatters of rain flick against her bare skin. It was one of, if not the most, romantic moment of her entire life. She could feel her heart swelling in her chest as Mars smiled against her lips.

“I’m the lucky one,” she murmured back.

Their naked bodies vibrated with warmth, but soon enough, the small trickles of rain morphed into a long stream that blasted onto the terrace. They shot up, quickly grabbing their clothing as they ran inside, hand in hand. They dropped their clothes in the lounge that sat directly next to the terrace and proceeded to begin making love once more on the couch just as rain turned to hail.

Rhi didn’t think the kind of relationship she had with Mars was humanly possible … which would make sense still, considering he was a shifter. His passion for her was a bottomless pit, which made her own thirst for his affection undeniably insatiable.

It was the stuff of poetry and romance novels she generally avoided in her college and young adult years. She once believed those didn’t serve anyone, particularly women, filling their heads with ideas of fictional men who would make them happy in ways no man would ever be capable of in reality.

But Rhi had found that she was utterly wrong. Life with Mars had completely and thoroughly turned into that fairy tale story, with great sex to boot. It was thrilling, but that pessimistic part of Rhi’s mind still itched at her, telling her that she shouldn’t let go and be with Mars just yet.

It was something she figured was born out of her upbringing, that constant nagging doubt. It was something that wasn’t new but remained irritating all the same.

She desperately wanted to let go of any anxiety and trepidation. His confession about his grandfather showed that he was willing to be vulnerable and to see her perspective. In adult relationships, there really wasn’t anything sexier than that.

Yet, once they had finally both calmed and settled into bed spooning one another, Rhi couldn’t keep the thought at bay. She told herself it was just her way. She had never had such a satisfying and whirlwind romance as this before. She closed her eyes, her brain relaxed from the wash of dopamine, and she fell asleep with Mars’s arms wrapped around her.

SEVENTEEN

MARS

When Mars rolled over in his bed, the space next to him was empty, though it was still warm.

The bear shifter listened closely, stretching his hearing far beyond the bedroom. And there she was in the kitchen, filling a mug with coffee while she looked through her emails.

Rhiannon had been staying at Mars's place for the past few nights. And he definitely wasn’t complaining. He couldn’t suppress the grin that stretched across his face at the thought of the night before.

They had started off cuddling in bed after a heavy meal. The night had ended with Rhiannon on top of him, riding herself to a shuddering climax.

Mars could stay like that forever. He wished, hoped, that they stayed like that forever. At this point, he’d give up everything to have her remain with him.

He got up out of bed and headed for the bathroom. He was also glad that Rhiannon was staying with him because she had received more threats. She had tried to conceal the information from him at first. But eventually, she broke down and told him.

Rhiannon had kept three of the threatening letters that she had received. Mars had instantly sent the letters to a PI who was also a shifter. That was only after his own security team, a trio of bear shifters, had gone through Rhiannon’s apartment. They had found no cameras or recording equipment, but Rhiannon had elected to remain at Mars's place for the time being.

He turned on the shower taps and ran a hand through his hair. He wouldn’t be seeing Rhiannon now for the next hour or three.

She was working from home in his study, and she had a strict do-not-disturb policy.

He sighed as he thought about his own day. Ever since Rhiannon had walked into Mars's life, Lenard had been running the Casey real estate empire more than he ever had. But Mars had been neglecting a lot of his responsibilities.

The board of directors was probably going to get itchy soon at his continual absences. After his shower, Mars got on the phone with Lenard.

“Hey, how are things at the office?” he asked, gulping down hot, bitter coffee. Rhiannon had left him an open-faced sandwich and fruit.

“Well, that depends on your definition of what an office is.” Lenard’s voice was dry, sardonic.

“I know. I know.” Mars sighed. “Look, I’ll come in today. We can go over what we’ve missed.”
