“And afterward, we’ll go to Casey’s?” Lenard’s voice was hopeful now. Mars smiled.

He had not just been neglecting his company. He had been neglecting his best friend.

“And afterward, we’ll go to Casey’s,” Mars agreed.

He dressed quickly, left a note for Rhiannon on the kitchen counter, grabbed his keys, and left.

As he drove to his office uptown, Mars mulled over Rhiannon’s situation. Whoever he had killed in the mall had not been the main threat.

Whoever they were, they weren’t important. Because the person who was actually threatening Rhiannon was still alive.

A wave of anger washed over Mars, and he slammed his fist on the steering wheel.

Calm down. This isn’t helping anyone.

He had to remain level-headed if he wanted to find the person doing this. “Speaking of which,” he murmured to himself before dialing the car phone.

The phone rang three times before the PI answered. The PI was a coyote shifter and had been on the police force before leaving to start his own gig.

“Alex, have you got anything for me?”

The shifter spoke with a curt voice, his words clipped and short. “I am still tracking down the author of these colorful letters.” Alex cleared his throat. “But I can tell you that there is a lot of money behind this.”

“How can you tell?” Mars's voice was quizzical. “I gave you three letters and told you to follow her. How did you track down a money trail already?”

Mars knew Alex was good but was he that good?

Alex gave a hoarse, coughing laugh. “I had the paper and ink analyzed by my lab,” Alex said. He coughed again before continuing. “Whoever wrote these letters spent hundreds of dollars on paper and ink.”

Mars pulled into the parking lot of his office building. The shiny steel and brick building almost shimmered in the heat of the morning.

“Have you picked up anyone following her?” Mars asked Alex as he turned off the car.

“No, but she has been at your place all the time. I’ve been sitting outside your home for days. There’s been no one suspicious.”

“Great.” Mars sighed frustratedly. “I need to find this bastard.”

“I wasn’t done,” Alex said abruptly. “There have been a few wolf shifters sniffing around her office building. I’m looking into it.”

“Thanks, Alex,” Mars said as the call ended.

The shifters who had been stalking Rhi from the abandoned mall after the first death had been wolves. Mars knew that Alex would look into any wolf shifters more closely. Alex was nothing if not thorough.

The mayor of Oklahoma City had actually been the one to recommend Alex to Mars.

Lenard was waiting for Mars in the foyer of the building when he walked in. His best friend and assistant rattled off a list of things that had happened.

Casey Real Estate had taken over another real estate company outside Oklahoma. The company had also provided discounted housing to low-income neighborhoods.

The board of directors had not been happy with that. But this was Mars's new pet project. They’d quickly agreed to the new philanthropic projects once Mars threatened to dissolve the board. After all, he was still the company’s majority shareholder.

“You’ve been productive without me. I should make you the CEO,” Mars said, smiling broadly at Lenard.

His best friend threw his head back, laughing raucously.

“Not in a million years. These have been the most stressful weeks of my life.” Lenard rubbed his eyes tiredly.

“Okay, I think it’s time for a drink and a steak at Casey’s. You’re burned out.”
