Casey’s wason the other end of town from the office, but the drive was short. Lenard was driving, and he knew a thousand different shortcuts.

Mars checked his phone just as they pulled up in front of the bar and grill.

There were a few messages from Alex and his security team. And one from Rhiannon, mentioning that she had to go into the office. A streak of cold fear sparked across Mars's skin, and he sat frozen.

“I have to make a quick call,” he told Lenard, who nodded and hopped out of the car. Rhiannon picked up a minute after he rang her.

“I’m putting a bodyguard on you. And this is non-negotiable,” he said, his voice stern and low.

Rhiannon sighed on the other end. “I get threats like those all the time, Mars. This is actually pretty normal for me.”

“Well, it shouldn’t fucking be normal,” Mars said hotly.

“I don’t want a bodyguard, and I need you to stop worrying.” Rhiannon’s voice had risen an octave, and Mars winced away from the phone.

“You can’t expect me not to worry. You’re my mate, and if I lose you, I have nothing.” The words slipped from him before he knew it. And on the other end, all he heard was silence.

Finally, Rhiannon spoke. “Fine. But I’m not going to like this. I will be complaining about this for every living second.”

“I wouldn’t expect anything less from you,” Mars replied, a smile stretching across his face and bleeding into his voice.

His mate hung up with a huff, and Mars instantly dialed his security team. “James?” he said when one of the bear shifters answered.

“Yes, boss?” The shifter’s voice was completely neutral. Mars had never heard any emotion in the voices of the security team he employed. Did they even have lives separate from their jobs? Maybe not, considering what they earned per annum.

“James, I want you on Rhiannon all the time. She is a target, but she has to go back to the office,” Mars said. He got out of the car. “I want you wearing weapons and ready to shift at all times. The rest of the team can continue investigating.”

James gave a grunt that Mars took as confirmation. Then the head of his security team hung up. Mars gave a sigh of relief before running a hand through his hair.

It was finally time to join Lenard in the bar.

Mars opened the letter, which was hand-delivered to him at the office. It had been a week since James had been following Rhiannon like a dog.

Knowing that she was in safe hands, had allowed Mars to go back to the office with less worry in his mind.

But with the delivery of the letter, everything changed. It took him several moments to absorb what the letter said.

Mars had been waiting for correspondence from a local charity that needed help. He had thought that maybe they still used snail mail. But this letter was the furthest thing from that.

The contents of the letter were printed in block letters on the same paper that had been sent to Rhiannon.

As Mars handled the paper gently, he understood what Alex had meant. The paper was thick and scented.

It was definitely expensive.

Putting a bodyguard on your bitch won’t work, Mr. Casey. I will find her, and I will tear her apart. And I’ll make you watch. Then, it will be your turn.

His blood froze as he read the letter again and again. The stalker had realized that they no longer had easy access to Rhiannon and had turned on Mars.

Mars sensed the stalker’s rage leaping at him off the page. But he could also see the control in the way that each letter was carefully printed.

Alex’s words echoed in his mind:“There is a lot of money behind this.”

Whoever Rhiannon’s stalker was, they had means. Lots of it. And they had friends in high places. Not many people knew the office building that Mars sat in was his office building. His father had been a paranoid man.
