It was good. Too good. Too exciting and yet too natural.

He was kissing her. Would he keep on kissing her, then and forever?

Mm, the bed was right there. His bed. His. Him. Alex. She couldn’t sleep with Alex. Her friend. Her gay friend. What the fuck was she doing?

She pushed him away, frowning in question at the cautious conviction looking back at her. “That was about Lance,” she whispered, searching for a reason, but Alex was already shaking his head. “You miss him, and you think maybe if—”

“No, Rainie,” he murmured, turning his hand to caress her cheek with the back of his fingers. “It’s about you, baby. It’s about us.”

She shook her head, clinging to his shirt. “You can’t wish your sexuality away, despite what certain groups in society will tell you. You know that. You hurt now because you just lost Lance—would you stop shaking your head at me and why are you smiling? This is so sad! I’m ranting, putting my shit on you. I don’t know who kissing me was supposed to comfort, me or you, but you’re gay and you can’t—”

“I’m straight.”

Say what? She’d sort of steamrollered over him. He couldn’t have said… “Excuse me?”

Alex was still smiling, stroking her face. “I’m straight, baby. Always have been.”

Her confused frown joined the alarm building in her gut. “You’re… what? But Lance—”

“Is an idiot friend who took a prank too far,” he said. “I’m hetero, Button, all the way… and I’m in love with you.”

Her eyes flared. Straight. Alex was… She couldn’t process it. Her mind, her body just wouldn’t accept… Their friendship flashed through her mind’s eye in one blink. The things she’d said to him. The things they’d done… snuggling on the couch, sharing the bed. She didn’t even close the door when she showered anymore.

Alex was straight. Anger flashed hot. The lying, manipulative… He was a sick fuck who’d been playing with her for weeks!

Shoving out of his arms, she didn’t recognize the vigilant guy, showing her his palms like he wanted to calm her.

“Baby… Hear me out…” She couldn’t hear it. Not more lies. She’d never be able to trust him again. “I’ll explain everything, just—”

Storming straight past him, out of the bedroom, they were done whether he knew it or not. Nothing else needed to be said.

“Gwenie!” she called to her friend as she grabbed the wineglass to guzzle its contents.

“Rainie,” Alex said from behind her.

She only looked at her roommate as the duo came in from outside.

“What’s wrong?” Gwen asked, obviously sensing something.

Not that her mood was subtle. The lying piece of…

“We’re leaving,” Rainie said without looking at either male.

She went out into the hall; Gwen would follow. Her friend wouldn’t loiter. Her real friend would support her. Not like…

Alex. Straight. The world was upside down.

All weekend, she’d flip-flopped on whether to ever go back to the coffee shop where they’d met. Anger took her to it on the Monday. The guy might be lying scum, but she wouldn’t let anyone run her out of a place she loved.

Ignore the urge to look at their table. He didn’t exist. It didn’t exist. Like their friendship had never happened, she joined the line. Oh, they had a new sweet treat. Would she eat that before or after the cinnamon bun in her fantasy feast?

“Rainie.” His voice speared her with pain. Block him out. Focus on the cakes. “Babe, we need to talk about this.” He’d called her babe a dozen times. In the past, it hadn’t stung, not like it did in that moment. “Please, give me a chance to explain.”

Explain. It was almost laughable. He’d lied to her. Let her believe the lie. Taken advantage of her trust. The list of grievances just went on and on.

“Hey, guy, there’s a line,” the guy behind them said.
