“Alex was respectful. Alex was sweet with me… and gentle.”

“I can be gentle, Button. This isn’t me pressuring you. Just appreciating you… I don’t know how long we’ll be apart.”

“And you think you’ll forget me?”

He laughed. “Guaranteed I won’t. Seeing you on video, hearing your voice every day, it won’t be the same as touching you.” He leaned in to inhale the scent of her hair. “Breathing you in.”

Man had a point, which was probably why she needed to run her hands up and down his chest and shoulders.

“Will you still be able to have lunch with me?” The way he hesitated raised her suspicions. “Honesty.”

“Daylight savings screws us. It’s a fifteen-hour difference instead of the usual seventeen hours.”

“Alex?” she warned. “What time will it be for you when I start lunch?”

“Three thirty.”

“That’s not bad… Will it interrupt your meetings?”

“In the a.m.,” he said. “Three thirty in the morning.”

Her hands stopped mid-caress. “You can’t call me at three thirty in the morning. You need sleep.”

“I can start my day late. I won’t have early meetings.”

“Give me your phone.”

Hers was in her purse somewhere, and he didn’t have a problem rolling over to retrieve his from the nightstand to hand it over.

“What are you looking for?”

An app that helped with time zones at work. Sometimes their clients or vendors were based in other states, though none were as far away as Sydney. The more she read on the app, the more dismayed she became.

“When I get home from work, your workday will just be starting… I’ll be in bed by the time you’re on lunch.”

“Don’t worry about it.”

Easy said. Sending him away was good for his business, but it would be a test on them.

Rainie swallowed. “Do you want my email?”

“Baby,” he said, taking the phone to put it back on the nightstand. “We’re good, right?” She nodded. “I will call you every day… probably more than once a day. And if you feel like sending any pictures…”

Though she shoved him, she wasn’t really offended. “I’ll get up early, like five or six… We can talk before I go to work.”

“Any time you want to call me, I’ll pick up. And if you want me to come home—”

“Don’t,” she said, touching his lips. “We’re being honest. Don’t promise me things you can’t deliver.”

His tongue met her fingertips as he moistened his lips. “Whatever you want, I will always deliver. I told you that. Use your power wisely.”

His company was important. She wouldn’t let him lose sight of all he’d built for a piece of ass. And, yes, she was the piece of ass.

“Why does this feel so different?” she whispered, tracing his collarbone.

“Every time I watched you fall asleep, I used to think about what it would be like to kiss you goodnight… to see your smile in the morning. I knew this had potential from our first conversation. You’re going through what I went through those first couple of weeks.”

“We’re supposed to be rebuilding our friendship.”
