“We are… Before I forget, there are keys in your nightstand behind you.”

Her nightstand. “Keys for what?”

“Here. The apartment. And you know half the closet is empty.”

“You want me to move into your apartment?”

“Whatever you want. Keep using the gym downstairs, come up here after, change, hangout. It’ll be empty anyway; I’ll need you to keep an eye on the place.”

Hmm, she wasn’t dumb enough to buy that. “Like there’s anything here you care about being stolen… You don’t have any plants or a pet.”

“It’ll be empty,” he said. “Use it, don’t use it. It’s your call, Button. And if you want to get a cat, get a cat.”

“I’m not getting a cat,” she said, wriggling closer to lay her head on him. “I haven’t figured out how to tame you yet. A cat will have to wait.” When he settled down, wrapping his arms around her, she smiled and closed her eyes. “Promise me you’ll come back. Even if it’s just to break my heart.”

He swept her hair away to curl his fingers around her jaw, drawing it up so he could kiss her head. “Never, baby. Never.”

Break her heart or come back?

His going away wasn’t such a bad thing. Without space to breathe, she’d dive deep into him. If that happened, neither of them would ever come up for air again.

In the warmth and comfort of her dreams, she was invincible. Even as she breathed in deep to soak up all the happiness around her, the fingers of reality clawed her out of slumber. Stupid reality.

Her dream faded and the day crept in. Except when she opened her eyes, the room was still dark. Though not completely…

Light. Where was that light coming from? She rolled onto her back and spotted the vertical strip of it by the closet door.

Before she could think about sitting up, the sliver widened and Xander’s silhouette appeared.

“What time is it?” she asked as a yawn overtook her.

“Just before five,” he said. “Go back to sleep, Button.”

“You were going to sneak out and leave me?” she asked, rolling onto her side, snagging his pillow to hug it to her face. “That’s rude.”

He came to sit on the edge of the bed and leaned over her. “You look like an angel when you sleep. I couldn’t wake an angel.”

“You better because if this is how you plan to treat me in the mornings, I’ll never sleep with you again.”

He bowed to kiss her cheek. “Noted.”

“Won’t you be tired when you get there? Leaving this early?”

“I’ll sleep on the jet.”

Knowing a man of his means wasn’t easy to get used to. “Do you want me to get up?”

His fingers kept moving in her hair, brushing it away from her face over and over. “To come with me? Abso-fucking-lutely.”

“I don’t have a passport.” Though that wasn’t what was holding her back. “I meant do you want me to leave with you, so I’m not alone in your apartment? In your bed. What if I steal stuff?”

“I told you, this is your apartment too.” He kissed her temple. “And this is your bed. Our bed. I said you had all of me, I meant it… Do you want me to leave Topher here with you?”

She blinked in faux surprise. “In bed?”

“In town,” he said, smiling, though not as much as her.
