Hmm, Dyce must be the friend Xander mentioned.

“Not Dyce,” Toria said. “Xavien Rourke.”

Merci and Roxie both laughed. “He’s an asshole!”

“Yeah,” Toria said unashamedly, scooting forward to peruse the food.

“And that does it for you?”

“He has something going on,” Roxie said, bobbing her head side to side. “I don’t know what exactly. Dyce said there’s a woman involved somewhere.”

“Wow, there you go,” Toria said, “proving my point.”

“What point?”

“That Zairn’s single friends are tying themselves down.”

“Tie yourself down if you want to, honey,” Roxie said. “And if you want me to set you up with someone, take your pick. What do you want? Rich?”

“Oh, he’d have to be rich.”

“Hot?”

“That goes without saying,” Toria said. “I like muscles.”

“You like personality,” Roxie said. “If a guy can make you laugh, you’re putty.”

“Nothing wrong with that. It doesn’t matter, I have to wait and see how your and Merci’s weddings both go down first. I want to be single for those. And when I do pick a lucky winner, I’ll have to make sure my wedding outdoes both of yours.”

“Wait ‘til I tell Jane that,” Roxie said to be greeted by laughter.

“How great is it that Gauge fell for a Chicago girl though,” Toria said, raising her almost empty glass in a silent toast before drinking the last of the alcohol in it. “What do you do?”

“I work for Viva Marketing,” she said and noted how Roxie made eye contact with Toria.

“No kidding,” Toria said, drawing her eyes away from her friend. “I used to work at Hype.”

“Wow? Really?” Hype was Viva’s closest competitor in Chicago. “You quit to come here?”

“There was a… difference in style,” Roxie said and leaned back while tipping her chin up to look at her. “Litigation pending.”

“That sounds interesting,” Merci said.

“Another couple of drinks and Toria will tell you everything you want to know,” Roxie said. “Come on, let’s put on some tunes while we finish these…” She poured fresh alcohol into each glass. “Then we’ll show Rainie to the Ruby Room.”

Cheers of agreement joined Roxie as she fumbled for the phone further down the table. Drinks, dancing, and good company. She couldn’t ask for more.

That wasn’t wholly true. She could ask for more. One thing more. Xander.

The Ruby Room was Roxie’s private playground. Well, okay, so all of Crimson was probably that, but Roxie was modest with her power, believe it or not. Music, drinks, who got granted entry, it was all down to Roxie. The woman had a fortune at her disposal, yet she was happiest singing along and dancing with her friends as thousands of other women would be doing across the world at that same moment.

It was a miracle she even felt her cellphone buzz, there would be no chance of hearing a caller. Except when she read her screen, she didn’t want to miss the call either.

Answering, she slipped out the door marked for the restrooms into a stairwell and raised the phone to her ear.

“Alex?”
