“Button?”

A smile curved her lips. “Hey.”

Oh, it felt good talking to him. They’d talked before she went for her workout. That was less than a day ago, yet it felt like forever had passed by.

“How are you doing, baby?”

Some of her contentment turned to contrition. “I’m—”

“With Roxie, I know,” he said, a smile in his voice.

“I should’ve called you. I should’ve checked—”

“It’s okay. After the way you reacted to her name, asking her to drop by was the least I could do. I didn’t really ask—”

“She eavesdropped, I know.”

They were in sync, and she loved that about them.

“She’s like that. Are you getting along?”

“Yes! She’s amazing. She just sucked me into her orbit and it’s like we’ve been friends forever.”

“Good. That’s good. Maybe I can be your plus one to the wedding.”

She laughed. “How are you? How are things going in Sydney?”

“Getting there,” he said. “There’s a bunch of hospitality bullshit pissing me off.”

“Hospitality?”

“Drinks, glad-handing. I want to get to the damn contracts, not have a party.”

“You have to play the game. If you’re impatient, they’ll see that, and maybe take advantage. Don’t get screwed on the deal just because you’re thinking about screwing my deal.”

A groan of pleasure vibrated the line. “I’ve been thinking a lot about that.”

“Mm, I bet you have. I’ve been thinking a lot about wasted opportunity…” The heat of flirtation cooled. “I’m sorry if I was an asshole, baby.”

“An asshole? This about the creep, Demetri, again?”

“No,” she said. “I don’t care about Demetri, I care about you. Xander Gauge is an incredible man. You’re loyal and hard-working, maybe a little misguided sometimes, but who isn’t?”

“How much have you had to drink?”

Maybe too much. “Roxie said I can stay at her place upstairs. They have a huge penthouse.” Which he probably knew, duh. “Rox says we’re always safe at Crimson.”

“You are. But take it easy, okay? Roxie is a full-time partier, it’s literally her job. Don’t try to keep up.”

“You don’t care that I worry about you? That I’m sorry?”

“You have nothing to be sorry for,” he said. “I don’t want you sweating the serious stuff, I want you to have some fun.”

And there was no better place for that than Crimson.

She leaned back against the wall. “Is your friend Xavien Rourke seeing anyone?”

“I… don’t know. Why? You want his number?”
