I snorted and stuffed my phone back into my small black purse.

Grandpa’s memory played tricks on him. Mom… Well, let’s just say I needed to be very quiet if I wanted to orgasm through speaker.

The kitchen smelled like fresh baked cake. The live-in nurse Cary had arranged—because he obviously loved Mom and tore open his heart and wallet for her—apparently loved to bake. It wasn’t so great for these curves, but hey, brownies.

Coffee lingered. Strong one to keep my granddad’s blood flow going and his heart beating. The man lived on caffeine. A trait he’d passed along to his granddaughter. And the reason he’d bought a super expensive coffee machine the Volt house was jealous of.

“Hey, Silas,” I greeted him and bent down to hug him in his recliner. We were back on first-name basis since he got a tantrum the last time that I called him ‘Grandpa’. Sadly, I had to let go of the soul he was because of the malign tumor swelling in his head.

“Hey, there.” He tapped my back and smiled at me, squeezing an eye closed into a pensive expression. “Dita, girl. You still know where I live, huh?”

Pleased he remembered my name, I hugged him a little tighter.

Seemed like today was a good day. Mom’s eyes welled with tears. It had been a long time since life gave him a chance to think so clearly.

“Of course, I do. Need to get rid of these Cuban coffee beans somewhere.” I waggled a small bag in front of him.

He snagged it and glanced at me appreciatively. “Inject those into my veins, sweetheart.”

“One shot of the Cubano roast, coming up!”

Being it five in the evening already, he didn’t get that shot. But bath time really was a joy to witness. Although I’d rather not having seen him streaking through the living room.

Afterwards, we bode the nurse and granddad goodnight and made sure he went to bed safe. It wasn’t until Mom and I plopped onto the couch with a glass of wine each, the interrogation started. She’d been pretty patient in the car earlier, but alas, she was vibrating.

“Have you asked the boys about dinner yet?”

Ugh. No.

“Do you have any idea what days fit best? If Cary and you don’t have any obligations, I might get you guys squeezed in.”

She pursed her lips in amusement.

“What? We’re all real busy.” I shrugged, partially lying about our schedules. Thank God, a new housekeeper had taken over the burden of changing the boys’ sheets.

Now I dirtied one of those.

Heat crept onto my cheeks. Was it nine yet?

“There is an ease over you, Dita.” She gulped another mouthful of wine to cover up the emotions. “A mother could only hope the spark inside her daughter would ignite again.”

“Okay, Mom, that’s enough for you.” I put away our glasses and scooted closer so she could wrap me into her arms.

We laid down on the couch, watching a soap opera I remembered her watching since I was little and rested my head on her shoulder.

I’d always been a mommy’s girl, and this was why. She didn’t just raise me but believed in me, was overly affectionate, and made me the woman I was today.

A filthy bitch screwing her stepson like the Kamasutra is a work-out plan.

Hey, there…

I’d smack my conscious sideways if I could. But that tidbit of information kept lingering. I’d been honest about losing my virginity to Billy in twelfth grade, about the diet that made me lose weight and got me fainting when I was twenty-two, and about the bullying at the dance studio. I’d never kept secrets from her.

Except now.

It seemed important. She deserved to be happy in her marriage. Whatever Ares and I had didn’t even scratch the surface of a proper relationship. We weren’t even working towards it. Our friendship existed solely out of benefits.

Really great benefits.
