The housekeeper wouldn’t find any condoms lying around like the previous one did—she could thank me later. Because I was stupidly falling for a guy and straight onto his magic dick without thinking about the consequences.

This was so bad…

But I was done having Mom worry about me. I was already coloring outside of the friendship boundaries.

Better keep that heart of mine in check. This time, if I failed, it would be on me.

Mom brushed her fingers through my hair just as Ares had done during my headache and asked, “Are the boys good to you?”

Yup,” I squeaked. “They treat me right.”

“Good to hear,” she said. Threading a subject as equally complicated as the passionate nights with Ares, she continued, “I wish they would see how much their father loves them.”

I stilled. I couldn’t spill Ares’s business to her. How to phrase this the right way?

“I’m not sure you heard the entire story, Mom. It always has two sides.” I hypocritically cringed.

The only side I knew was the one Ares told me. There were many details left out, but admittedly, it was easily condonable since the matter was private. Besides, fucking and Cary in one sentence made me think of my mother’s sex life, and if everyone in the Volt clan were all the same in that department…

Uh, let’s just say I didn’t really want to go there.

Mom scratched behind my ear as if I was a puppy. “I know, honey. And I know his cocaine addiction started a of lot the problems they deal with today.”

“His absence, too, maybe? Touring and having kids running around isn’t easy to combine.”

Mom shook her head. “Raising two twelve-year-old boys by yourself certainly is hard, Dita. He juggled his addiction with the absence of their mother.”

She sighed, and I felt the pain we’d endured ourselves.

His family fell apart like ours, except I never really knew my dad. It was hard to miss someone you never truly knew. But at twelve years old, I assumed every child depended on both parents in their lives.

“That must be tough,” I agreed.

“You and I both know.” She dropped a kiss on my hairline. “Cary said he’s in a place where the puzzle pieces of life fall together.”

I smiled. “With a hot wifey as yourself, I’m sure it is.”

Mom giggled in that cute way she always did. “There are times he mentions that, too.”

I pretended to gag. Which probably would’ve made Ares’ eyes roll if he was here. Heat flushed to my belly once again, and I suppressed the feeling of wanting his presence. The warmth he radiated against my skin. His big hands leaving a path of goosebumps everywhere he touched me. The big, bad aura around him that brightened in my presence.

“So, uh, I guess I should mention that dinner again?” I threw in the subject that I hadn’t actually talked to Ares or Rio about at all.

“That would be nice.”

Cool.

I guess I had to seduce Ares into compliance.

If it would bring families together again, I would do my absolute best. Perhaps, if their bond was restored, it wouldn’t be that bad if my crush on Ares would develop into something more.

Thud-thud.

Goddamn heart.

But most of all, he’d become the successor of The Snake Zoo.

“Sure, Mom. You know I’ll do anything for you.”
