She had another outfit for me to try on. It fit like a glove. The two-piece black dress had everything that made me feel sexy and fit for dancing. I couldn’t say the same about the other garments I’d received. At least the crop top I was wearing now covered up enough of my chest area to not emanate slutty vibes. Well, sort of. Spaghetti straps and a tight-fitted V that secured my breasts but still showed enough skin to lend them space to breathe.

“If you think I’m going to let a guy grind his crotch against me”—I pointed at my butt”—you’re dead wrong.”

“Isn’t that what dancing is all about?” She saucily rubbed her body against mine.

“Uh, not really, no,” I pushed her back, giggling because she was hard to get rid of.

She shrugged. “We’ll see, hot stuff.”

Once inside, José’s was already flirting with the DJ. We greeted him with a wave. His brows lifted appreciatively when he saw me nearing. He motioned he was busy—which I’d already noticed—but would come over with drinks later.

And tequila always called for a party.

When Rio had rattled off Cary’s address to Steph, she’d appeared to be unimpressed with me. As she squinted her eyes at me, I scowled and tried to keep my mouth shut from asking if she’d seen Dita. If Dita had talked about my betrayal. Because that’s what it was.

Steph had opted to pretend her finger was a knife and slice her throat. “If you hurt her, I’ll kill you.”

It was just that, a threat, weak and futile. We all knew I was miserable enough to drowse myself with weed, booze, and snakes, numbing myself with a toxic getaway. Anything to not remind me of Dita completely blocking me out of her life.

Dita hadn’t told Steph anything, and I thought they were close enough friends. After all, I’d stumbled into Dita’s room many times with the urge to plow her on every available surface, only to be thwarted by Steph’s presence.

But it would be easier if this whole fucked up situation was cleared out by just the two of us. The fewer people involved, the better. If Dita hadn’t told her, then maybe she had put her hopes up on coming back to me.

Yeah, right. She didn’t text or call me back. She hadn’t even read the last messages I’d send.

I clutched my shirt, willing the pressure on my chest to go away. I’d rather have a stroke than miss someone so fiercely.

I’d been through it once. Sure, I could cope with another loss.

Having the image in my head of my brother and her together was all kinds of fucked. He’d delivered the book and was rewarder with a cuddle session that lasted for a few hours. The knife in my back made it hard to relax in my chair.

My feet took me upstairs where I put Hopitles back into his cage. He sensed the grim state I was in. No need to put the stress of heartache onto my boy.

I punched my pillow on the go, although I wanted it to be my brother’s teeth.

It must’ve felt so good to snuggle with my better half.

I sure hoped it wasn’t code for anything else, or he was going to have a permanent imprint of my fist in his face.

I fumed some more before I went back to sit with the guys downstairs. Misha had brought Zander, his big brother, along.

Two potheads, a fuckup, and a backstabber.

Things were absolutely splendid.

Zander lit a joint and shared it with Misha. Rio and I only sporadically participated, given our dad’s history with addiction. Besides, I always rather indulge in the sweet sins of having a woman underneath me.

Until Dita left. And there were no joys of another female in my bed.

Misha inhaled, checked his phone, and exhaled a strained puff. “If these girls haven’t raised hell already, they’re going to tonight.”

Zander leaned in to inspect Misha’s screen. His eyes were already drooping, but when those widened and he whistled, one side of my mouth curved into a grin. Zander was always in for shenanigans.

Zander elbowed Misha’s arm, causing him to miss another pull of the joint. With an annoyance to his pursed lips, he scowled at his brother, inhaled, and blew a cloud of smoke in his face. They both burst into laughter. The entire thing had happened in slow motion for the ones who were stone cold sober. The entire thing was completely ridiculous. Rio and I both snorted in unison.
