“You’ve been here before?” I finally say. She never mentioned it until the day she came to me all excited a couple of weeks ago and we started making the plan.

She stops moving around and doesn’t speak for a few seconds. The sounds of the forest seep into the silence. The rain on the roof, the leaves swaying in the wind. I memorize them all.

“A long time ago.” She doesn’t elaborate and I don’t ask her to. We have a bond that I’m sure is the rarest kind of bond there is, even between other sets of identical twins. Since the age of five, she is the only person I’ve ever known. She is the only person that I’ve ever spoken to and the only person who’s ever spoken to me. Since the age of five, she’s been my everything. Her and the characters from TV shows, but they don’t count. They never talk to me. Only at me. If she has a secret from me, that’s fine. One day she’ll tell me. She always tells me everything.

“Look. I couldn’t take much. I needed to make it look like a kidnapping. I have enough clothes for two days and I managed to stash a couple of thousand dollars away. It’s not going to last long, but if we don’t change our appearance, we aren’t going to make it to Mexico. Here’s a chocolate bar. I know it’s not a lot, but I’ll bring us back something we can heat up for dinner. This place has a stove that should work and if not, we’ll have a cookout. Ok?”

“Okay.” I reply, fingering the chocolate bar. It’s a Kit Kat. I can tell by the ridges.

“There’s a small town about ten minutes walk from here. I’m going to get us some hair dye and some food. We already have scissors. Tomorrow we’ll be unrecognizable and we can try to hitch our way to Manhattan and from there I’ll get us far away from here, Lauren.”

She makes it sound so easy. I know she’s keeping her tone light and breezy for my benefit. Even with our father gone, there’s a good chance that she’s already been reported missing. Her, not me. No one knows I exist.

I give her an extra squeeze as she leaves, and she presses down on my palm. Three times. Everything is going to be alright.

And once again I’m alone.
