“Wow, did you really make all of this?”

“I did.” I sit across from her, ready to get the night going.

We fix our plates, and after a few beats of silence, Gina chimes in with her first question. “Have you had any serious relationships since me?”

“Wow, way to break the ice.” I wipe my mouth, pondering how to answer the question. “I’ve dated a few women, but something always went bad. The last girl said that I was too anal-retentive about things. I like for everything to have a place and stay there. I don’t care if it’s moved; just put it back.”

“And that drove her crazy?”

“No, it drove me crazy that it didn’t matter to her. You know, the person who messes something up after it’s cleaned up? That’s her.”

Gina covers her mouth to conceal her food as she laughs. “You got rid of her?”

“Quick, fast, and in a hurry.”

Gina nods her understanding, giggling. “I remember when you broke up with that girl Amber before we got together. You told me something similar.”

“That girl was nasty. She invited me to her room to make out, but it was atrocious! She had to throw clothes and makeup on the floor to get to her bed, had dishes in her room, and I couldn’t get down like that.”

“Why did I never get dumped for being messy?” She is fishing. Something that hadn’t changed. She enjoyed knowing she was the exception. I can’t give her that thrill without getting something in return.

“You would have if I’d ever caught wind of you being homeless inside your house.”

Gina almost chokes on her food from laughing. I run to grab her a bottle of water, which she accepts gratefully.

“There is no breaking up with me. You could’ve tried, and I’d been at your locker in the morning like always.”

“I bet.”

After we finish dinner, we lounge on a large throw in the middle of the living room floor. We are working on our second bottle of wine, and our inhibitions are low. Her legs drape over mine, and we lean against the front of the couch. I caress her exposed skin, knowing it is affecting her. Her eyes are the perfect view of her soul, and she wants me. I don’t think she is brave enough to act on it, though.

“I want brownies,” she mumbles.

“At this hour?” I look at my cell for the time. It is ten after ten.

“Are you putting me out, Jamison Michaels?” Her hand finds a home on my chest, where she massages up to my shoulders.

The need to fuck is riding me hard, but I am also enjoying everything else about our time. I know if I kiss her again; we aren’t moving from this floor. I’d be inside her staking a claim that I don’t think either of us is ready for.

“No. Brownies take like hours to make.”

“If you have everything that I need, it should take about thirty minutes. Or we could just order some from someplace.”

“We could. Whatever you want is fine with me.”

“Let me see what you have.” Gina staggers to the kitchen to search, and I go back to relaxing.

The door opens, and Andre walks in. “Hey. How’d the date go?” he asks.

“Good. She’s in the kitchen looking for stuff to make brownies.”

“Brownies? Sign me up.”

“I need cocoa and chocolate chips.” Gina comes back into the room with flour on her nose.

I chuckle. “We can order them then.”

“I’ll run down to the corner store. I’m sure they have it,” Andre volunteers. “Hers has to be better than some that you can get delivered.”
