“Yeah, we can go home now.” I hesitate because I question myself, but then I realize everyone deserves those special kinds of treats every once in a while. “How would you like to have ice cream for lunch?”

“No way!”

I nod. “Yes way! You’ve been a fantastic boy, and you deserve it.”

“Mommy, are you looking for something to wear for your date with Jamie tomorrow?” Lucas asks just as I park the car in front of the ice cream parlor.

I turn around and give him a curious look. “How did you know I had a… um, date tomorrow?” I hesitate over the word date. Is that what this is?

He rolls his eyes. “I may only be six, but I have ears, and I know how to listen.”

I laugh. “Yes, you do. Are you okay with this?”

Now he laughs. “Sure, I like Jamie and Andre.”

I smile and get out of the car.

After we finish our ice cream and Lucas has made a sufficient mess, we head back to the car and make our way home. We only drive a few minutes when Lucas states, quite matter-of-factly, “Mommy, I think you should wear your black denim skirt, and that real pretty shirt that has holes in it and no arms.”

I look up in the rearview mirror, astounded. “You do, do you?”

“Yeah, you look really pretty in that outfit.” He quickly back paddles, “I mean, you always look pretty, but I like that outfit.”

I shake my head. This kid is just too young to have thoughts about outfits and which ones I look pretty in. But then, I smile because the outfit he picked has been in my closet for years. It was always Hawk’s favorite.

I open the oven to check on the baked spaghetti I’d made. It is my mama’s recipe, and she’d made me help her in the kitchen many times to prepare it. The dish oozed and bubbled just right on the sides while the top browned around the edges nicely.

Five more minutes.

I go back to chopping veggies for the salad and toss them in oil and vinegar. I sprinkle parsley and chives on top with parmesan cheese. My garlic bread is on the tray, waiting for me to put it into the oven. The wine is chilled; the only thing I am missing is my date.

Just after I restore my kitchen to clean, the doorbell chimes. I look around, making sure that everything is where it is supposed to be. I put the garlic bread in the oven, lighting candles that had burned out along the way.

When I open the door, Gina is standing there in a pair of black jeans that mold against her body in all the right ways. She is wearing a black silk lace tank that accents her perfect summer tan. And those shoes draw my eyes to her sexy long legs. Ones I know I want to touch while they are around my waist.

Seeing her like this is different. The teenage body she had then is missing in action, and I am grateful. Gina is a woman, not a girl. And that’s what I need to remember. Time had passed, making her someone I don’t know but that I want to.

“Are we staying out here?” she asks playfully.

I clear my throat, embarrassed that she’d rendered me speechless once again. “No. Please, come in.” I take her hand, leading her inside.

“Oh, Jamie… it’s beautiful!”

She walks around the candlelit rooms admiring them. She follows the trail into the dining room, where the table is set up for our date. I pull out her chair for her to sit, but she pulls me to her lips for a kiss filled with passion and need.

I press her against me, smoothing my hands over her body. She is soft, not too skinny, but still petite in ways. She’d pulled that long dark brown hair of hers back off her face into some fancy updo. I trail kisses down her neck, nibbling too.

“I’ve been thinking about the way you kissed me since yesterday. I wanted another, and I thought I could wait, but… Mmm…”

I nibble along her exposed collarbone. Her shoulders are exposed, and my next target as I let my mouth lead the way. Nipping her shoulder, she gasps loudly. Her eyes tell me she won’t protest too much if I take this all the way. And I want to. But we aren’t two school-age kids who need to rush things. I place a single kiss on her lips before I go back to pulling out her chair.

“We eat first; then if you’re still interested, maybe we can see where things go later.”

“Okay.” Flushed, she sits down.

I bring out the food from the kitchen and place it on the opposite end of the table from where we are sitting. Wine comes next.
