“Yesterday. Right before I called you. I—I wasn’t feeling well thinking it was food poisoning and a cold. So, I met with my primary care physician. But she told me I was pregnant and needed to see my OB-GYN. He confirmed it and did an ultrasound. It shows two babies. I—I’m three and a half months. In four more weeks, he can detect their gender. He explained even though I had my birth control shot on time, it’s not always one hundred percent effective. I didn’t mean to get pregnant. It just happened. Sorry.”

I ramble on while Luc stares at me. His face reveals nothing—happiness or sadness. I bite my lower lip to shut myself up and wait for his response. If any.

He sits up with his back against the headboard and lifts me with him. He stares out the window for what seems like forever but is only a few minutes. I wait, not wanting to speak first and needing to hear his truth. At last, he faces me.

“You have nothing to be sorry about. However, I apologize for my reaction. It caught me off guard. I was expecting a conversation about the tabloid photos. You being pregnant? Far from my radar.”

I flinch and drop my gaze.

“Merde. I did it again,” he mutters and swipes a hand over his face. “I don’t mean it like that. You being pregnant would never have occurred to me since you’re on birth control.”

I nod, feeling a bit better.

“I don’t blame you. At all. Our babies must be pretty determined to be born since they surpassed the shot’s effectiveness,” he says with a wry grin. His sapphire blue eyes light up with mirth. “Or I have super sperm.”

Giggles burst from my mouth. His chuckles join my laughter. I sag against him as relief floods my body, thankful he’s not angry. He places a kiss on the top of my head.

“Twins, huh? I’d love to see their scan. Perhaps the doctor can send one via email.”

I scramble to my feet and rush from the room, waving my hand over my shoulder as he calls to me. I collect my handbag from the living room and return to the bedroom. Grinning, I pull a folder from my handbag and place it on Luc’s lap.

He glances at it and back at me. I nod vigorously and gesture towards the folder. He tugs his lower lip between his teeth and flips the folder open. He inhales at the sight of the scans of each baby Dr. Rice printed. I hold my breath until Luc speaks.

“Blair, Ma Chérie… You’re truly pregnant…”

He stares in awe at the babies the size of little navel oranges with bits of fuzz on their heads. Both have smiles on their tiny faces. Much like their father now. He holds the scans up as his eyes dart from one to the other.

“Twins…”

He glances at my belly. I frame it with my hands and smile at him. He takes another breath and places the scans in the folder, sets it aside, and leans forward. His hands clasp my waist as he places two kisses on my belly and murmurs in French, too low for me to hear.

When he stares up at me, tears shine in his eyes. I cup his cheek as tears prick mine.

“My babies.”

“Yes.”

The ring of the doorbell interrupts our moment.

Luc blinks rapidly and rises from the bed, then dons his robe. Now, I question where he’s going. A short while later, he returns. His eyes find mine as he strides across the floor. Beside the bed, he lowers to one knee and lifts a small, red leather box. I gasp when he opens it.

A thirty-carat oval cut, flawless diamond on a pavé diamond platinum band rests on red silk. The ring glitters in the sunlight, taking my breath away. It blurs as tears fill my eyes.

“Blair Thomas, you give me a reason to live again. I want a long life with you, Ma Petite Fille, Ma Chérie, Mon Amour. Will you grant my wish and marry me?”

My head nearly bobs off my neck as I extend my left hand, trembling with excitement. I yelp when Luc slaps it. My eyes fly to his.

He smirks.

“Words, Mon Amour.”

“Oui. Oui. Oui!”

His grin widens as he slips the engagement ring on my finger and kisses it. I throw my arms around his neck as he stands and crawls us up onto the bed. He planks over my body as he stares into my eyes.

“A jamais mien, Mon Amour.”

“Yes, forever yours, my love.”
