I sit and brush my fingertips across her cheek.

She closes her eyes and nuzzles against my palm. A soft purr slips past her lips.

“No. I love you too,” she whispers, followed by a yawn. “I only need you and our babies.”

Lucette Valentine Montaigne, my first girl. Also named for me with the same meanings as her brother. Her sapphire eyes and jet-black hair mark her as a Montaigne. A perfect baby who weighs a healthy five pounds with all ten fingers and toes.

A beautiful wife and fraternal twins, all healthy and alive. My heart swells. My family.

Mine!

Blair

“Congratulations on the birth of your beautiful, healthy babies!”

My father declares as he holds his day-old grandchildren proudly.

I smile at the sight.

Luc slips his hand in mine and dips his head to kiss my lips.

“You’ve made him so thrilled,” he murmurs.

“And you? Have I made you happy, my love?” I ask softly as I lean into him, seeking his warmth and strength.

Luc straightens and cups my chin. An intense stare pins me in place.

“Absolutely. With no doubt. You bring me unparalleled joy and make my life complete, Mon Amour,” he responds in a voice thick with emotion.

I whimper and bury my face in his neck as I sob, thankful my dreams come true. Throw in the hormones raging through my body, and I can’t control my emotions.

“Oh, Blair…”

Luc’s comforting murmurs of love and support boost my spirit. He’s my rock.

“Let’s give them some privacy—”

My mother’s suggestion reminds me I’m surrounded by my loved ones. My babies are healthy. I have my true love by my side. I have a lot to be thankful for.

With fresh resolve, I face my family and friends.

“No, stay. Don’t mind my blubbering,” I say as I dab my face with Luc’s handkerchief. “You do not understand just how much I love and appreciate you. New life brings great joy.”

My mother comes over to the bed and clasps our hands before she kisses them. I see my cerulean blue eyes reflected in hers, set in the same oval-shaped face.

The power of genetics to pass traits from parent to child amazes me. Just as illustrated in the twins and the Montaignes. I smile at her.

“Darling, never make excuses for your emotions! Your body is going through a lot. And you thought you had some choice words for Luc. Well, let me tell you, I laid your father out each time!”

The room fills with our laughter, His chuckles loudest of us all.

They remain for a bit more, then leave us.

“—your Maman is resting now, Lucien. You and Lucette wore her out coming into this world, you know… Yes, I know. You’re tired too… Tell me all about it, mon fils.”

The low drone of Luc’s words enters my dreams.
