It’s later in the evening and the quiet of the room makes it easier for his voice to carry.

I awake to find him pacing the floor with a small bundle bouncing in his arms. For a few minutes, I watch transfixed by the sight of my six-foot, four-inch, powerfully built Alpha male negotiating with our newborn son.

Lucien responds with low-pitched whining, just as engaged in the conversation as his Papa.

My gaze leaves them to find Lucette still tucked in her crib, covered in a soft, white cashmere blanket and matching beanie. They’re a gift from their Uncle Jasper. She sleeps peacefully. So, I return my attention to my man and our son.

“—Do you know how much I love you and your sister? A whole lot, Lucien. The two of you are an unexpected joy. The thought of having children anytime soon never occurred to me. But your Maman stole my heart after years of knowing her as a little girl. It took us a while. But here we are and here you and Lucette are, too. I will do all in my power to protect and care for your Maman, Lucette, and you…”

Luc’s voice cracks, and I realize he’s holding back tears.

I’m not the only one on an emotionally charged ride. He needs me, too.

“My love,” I call to him softly.

Luc stops walking and lifts his gaze from our son’s face to mine. In the low light, his eyes sparkle with unshed tears.

My heart clenches.

“Come,” I say, opening my arms to welcome both.

Luc sits beside me, and I lean forward to kiss his lips. Then place my forehead against his.

Rustling from the crib draws our attention to Lucette. Our other bundle must sense she’s missing family time as her movements escalate to cries.

I take Lucien, and Luc rises to bring her to me. Time for them to drink from the golden chalice.

Luc watches us with such love in his weary sapphire blue eyes. He told me he still can’t believe we’re parents and have healthy fraternal twins. The day he found out about my pregnancy was like a bolt of lightning to his heart, again.

He understood then the importance of providing a safe and happy home for us—his own little family, one he created from his heart and loins. Without saying it, he alluded to the past birth so we could move forward with our new life together. Nothing and no one will come between us.

I wholeheartedly agree with the love of my life. We will have the life set for us even before we knew one another. I smile to myself as I watch Luc stare at our babies and me.

Once they’re fed, changed, and tucked in their cribs, Luc takes off his robe and returns to the bed.

With the custom suite, we could bring in a larger sized hospital-style bed that could accommodate both of us. Why should Luc cramp his large frame in a convertible chair?

“Your words were so sweet, my love,” I tell Luc as I snuggle against his shoulder.

He wraps his arm around me and pulls me closer as he kisses the top of my head.

“I didn’t mean to wake you,” he responds quietly.

I lean back and cup his face in my hand. His clean-shaven face now with more than a five o’clock shadow is weary, too.

“Hey, we made them together. We care for them together,” I tell him. “You’ve been just as stressed, if not more… So, you need a break, too.”

I rest my head again and continue.

“My mother told me the secret is to get sleep when they sleep. Sooo, bonne nuit mon amour et fais de beaux rêves,” I say as my eyelids close.

Luc chuckles and murmurs his love for me, too.

The rhythmic beat of his heart lulls me into a peaceful sleep, where I dream of our return to our newly redecorated seizième arrondissement mansion and our new life together.
