But when he asks me what’s wrong, I opt to keep it to myself for now. This moment is too wonderful to ruin with all my bullshit.

“I’m just tired,” I say.

“Do you want me to go?” He asks.

“That depends.”

“On what?”

“On if you’re ready for everyone to find out about us,” I say with a smile. “Your truck in my driveway bright and early will be a dead giveaway.”

“Hmm,” he says, his eyes squinting at me. “I’m torn. Part of me wants to scream from the rooftops that you’re my girl, but part of me wants to keep you to myself a little while longer.”

“Yeah, there’s something sort of sexy about having a dirty little secret that we keep from everyone else,” I agree. “Maybe we keep it quiet for just a little while.”

“Okay, beautiful,” he whispers, leaning down to kiss me. When he looks at me again, he adds, “I guess that means I should probably go.”

A strand of his hair falls in his eyes. I push it out of the way and smile at him. “Stay just a little while longer. I’m not ready for you to leave just yet.”

Chapter Twenty-three

Shane

The next few days pass by in a blur. I spend my days busting my ass on the ranch to make sure I get off at a decent time so that I can get to Jenna.

To not let anyone know what we are up to, I park my truck a little way down the road from the ranch. Thankfully, this whole area is pretty secluded.

I keep a duffel bag full of clothes at her place even though we don’t wear much clothing at all most of the time. We spend our evenings utterly obsessed with each other—not just in a physical way but talking and laughing before I head home to crash for the night.

Jenna is incredible, and I can’t seem to get enough of her. Right now, I’m just biding my time, anxiously awaiting my next day off, so we can spend an entire uninterrupted day together. I just have to make it through today and tomorrow before that will happen. Tomorrow is Halloween, and I imagine I’ll end up having to work late since most of the other guys leave early to take their kids trick-or-treating.

Walking over to my usual spot, I take a seat and get ready to eat my lunch. Before I can take a bite of my turkey sandwich, my phone vibrates in my pocket.

An involuntary smile tugs at my lips when I see it’s a message from Jenna.

Sunshine: Miss you, Sweets.

I quickly type out my reply.

Me: Miss you more, beautiful.

I about jump out of my skin when Jonas starts talking from behind me. “Whoa, that must be a good text to elicit a smile like that.”

Before I can respond, Taylor joins in the conversation. “Only a woman can make a guy give that big, dorky grin.”

“Oh, yeah,” Jonas agrees. “For sure.”

Taylor slaps me on the shoulder. “I know who it is, you sneaky dog!”

My heart thumps in my chest, wondering how my boss will take it when he figures out I’m banging his little sister.

Taylor continues, “Your date the other night must have gone better than you led on. You been seeing her at night?”

Not entirely comfortable with lying, I simply nod and shove a big bite of sandwich in my mouth.

Thankfully, they start talking amongst themselves and are distracted when my phone vibrates again.

Sunshine: How’s your day going?
