There’s a knock on the front door, and I wonder why the hell he’s knocking. We’ve been trying to keep things a secret, so usually, he just walks in.

“Come in,” I call, not wanting to get up off the couch.

Instead of Shane walking through the door, it’s my three brothers who enter.

“What the hell are you doing here?” I ask in a tone a bit harsher than I intend.

“Hello to you too,” Jessie scoffs.

“Sorry,” I say.

“Do you just leave your door unlocked and tell folks to just come on in?” Jonas asks.

Jared laughs. “Look at all the candles and shit. I think our dear, sweet sister was expecting someone other than us.”

“Uh, no,” I stammer. “I was just watching scary movies. That’s what you do on Halloween. Speaking of Halloween, shouldn’t you be taking your kids trick-or-treating?”

“Didn’t you hear?” Jessie asks. “It’s supposed to storm pretty hard, so they’re doing the Fall Festival this weekend where all the kids can do it then.”

I nod. “So, you decided to come to see your sister? And why are you guys being all weird?” I’m referring to the fact that they’re all still huddled by the front door, and all are wearing oversized coats.

Jessie speaks again. “We know how much you love Halloween, and we, your loving brothers, decided to do something to cheer you up since you can’t celebrate like usual.”

Before I can ask exactly how they’re planning to do that, they all shake the coats off their shoulders and let them fall to the floor. I see their outfits but only partially in the dim glow of the candles, but my eyes must be playing tricks on me.

There’s no way.

But when I turn on the lamp next to me, I see that my vision is just life.

My three tall, fit brothers are all standing in front of me…dressed like women.

And not just any women. The Mitchell brothers look like some two-bit ladies of the night.

All three of them wear short black leather skirts and knee-high boots to match. Each of them is wearing a different colored neon tube top. And the cherry on top of it all is the long wig that each of them wears and poorly done makeup.

When my shock starts to wear off, I about bust a gut laughing. Tears stream down my cheeks as I rock back and forth with the giggles.

Jessie smiles. “Boys, we made her smile. Mission accomplished.”

“We better have,” Jonas says, pulling a six-pack of beer out of a grocery bag and handing them out to the other two. “These outfits make us look ridiculous.”

Jared pops the top on his can before plopping down in a chair. “Speak for yourself. I look fucking fantastic.”

Jonas scoffs. “Dude, you didn’t even have to wear a wig with that long hair of yours.”

Jared snaps his fingers in a sassy way. “You’re just jealous of my awesome man-bun.”

“Not a chance.”

Jessie interrupts their joking. “Oh, hush, you two. Aren’t you guys the least bit curious about who our sweet baby sister was waiting on?”

All three of them turn to look at me. It’s tough to take them seriously with their ridiculous makeup starting to run.

Shrugging my shoulders, I say, “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

Jessie asks, “So, you’re just sitting here all alone watching scary movies?”

“Jessie, you know me. Does that really seem out of character?” I ask.
