“Ex-boyfriend,” I correct.

He sighs. “Okay, why are you living with your ex-boyfriend?”

Now I regret not telling anyone the extent of my injuries and the events that followed.

Before I can answer, a voice coming through the door says, “You’re living with a boy?”

I turn toward the voice and see my other brothers, Jonas and Jared, walk in.

“What are you guys doing here?” I ask.

Jonas answers, “Jessie called and said you needed help moving.”

I turn toward Jessie. “I called you, and you told the whole damn family? Is Momma on her way too?”

“No, should I call her?” Jared jokes.

Jessie says, “Look, Jenna, I didn’t know how much stuff you had, and two pick-up trucks are better than one. Plus, someone will need to drive your car home since you can’t drive with your bum leg. I can only make one trip because Tracy works this evening, so I’ll have Nora.”

Tracy is his wife, and Nora is their little girl.

When I don’t say anything, he adds, “Do you want to tell us why we are picking you up in the middle of the school year from a strange apartment that smells like stale beer and Fritos?”

Before I answer, I hobble back to the chair and sit down, propping my foot up on the footrest.

When I get settled, I say, “My leg is worse than I thought.”

The three of them take a seat on the couch while we talk.

“How bad?” Jonas asks.

“Bad enough that I’ll never play competitive volleyball again because no one will chance it.”

“Shit, sis. I’m so sorry,” Jessie says.

“Oh, it gets better,” I say with a hefty dose of sarcasm. “Because I’m not able to play volleyball, I lost my scholarship, which means I have no money for school.”

I go on to tell them about everything that’s been happening the past few weeks. I give them the Reader’s Digest version though so we aren’t here all day.

When I finish, none of them seem to know what to say. I’m not exactly the touchy-feely type, so they know not to get too deep on me.

Jared is the first one to speak finally. “Well, boys, I think our sister has been through enough. Let’s get this girl moved.”

They all stand up, ready to get to work. Slowly, I start to join them, but Jonas glares at me.

“Sit your butt back down. We don’t need you hurting yourself even worse. Just point to what needs to go, and we’ll carry it down to the truck.”

With a weak smile, I thank them and sit back down. Although I hate feeling helpless, I know I’d probably just slow the process down. And the sooner we can get out of here, the better.

My brothers might enjoy busting my balls, and they might be ridiculously overprotective, but at the end of the day, they’re the best brothers I could ask for. No matter how busy they get in their own lives, they still drop whatever they’re doing to help their little sister.

I’ve watched all of them grow from single crazy guys into married family men with kids.

It takes them no time at all to get my belongings down to the trucks. Since I’d been living in a dorm, I didn’t have any big furniture.

The three of them come back in to do one final sweep of the apartment to make sure we didn’t forget anything.

When I’m sure all my stuff is out, Jessie turns to me. “You ready to go home, Jenna?”
