“Well, Jenna, what brings you in today?”

Not sure if I want to divulge all the stuff I’ve been reading lately, I try to think of a more tactful way to put it. “I’ve been into romance books.”

She leads me over to a shelf titled ROMANCE, but I can tell by the covers that they are a bit more of the sweet side.

Turning toward Gwen, I say, “Uhm, romance as in…”

I have no idea how to put it, but thankfully, she seems to catch on. “Ahhh, you want the dirty stuff?”

This time, she leads me to a separate shelf that looks way more my speed. “Thanks,” I say. “Do you get a lot of women looking for this section?”

She nods. “More than you’d think. But most of them will deny it. I have no idea why. There’s nothing wrong with reading some lady porn.”

I laugh at her calling it the same thing I did. “To be honest, I just started getting into it. I’ve had much more time to read lately, and this is all my sister-in-law had on her bookshelf.”

“Trust me, when you dive into it, you will be sending your sister-in-law a thank you card,” she says with a smile.

“Oh, believe me, I’m already thinking about it.”

She leaves me alone to browse for a few minutes, and I grab a couple of books to buy. Although there’s a whole list of ones I’d love to read, my wallet is telling me that I need to show some restraint.

When I get to the counter, Gwen takes the books from me, but she hesitates a moment before scanning them. “This may be a little presumptuous of me, but are you looking for a job?”

“A job?” I ask, confused.

“Yeah, it’s just me working here now, and I could use the help. The pay isn’t anything crazy, but I’ll keep you well-stocked in books to read.”

It takes a moment for her words to click in my head, but when I do, I reply, “Hell yeah, I’d love a job. Oh, maybe I shouldn’t curse in front of my new boss.” I slap my hand over my mouth.

“Honey, have you seen me? As far as I’m concerned, curse words are just sentence enhancers.”

We both laugh, and she tells me to come in and start in a few days.

I pull out some cash to pay for my books, but she doesn’t accept it. Instead, she says, “You work here now. Just bring them back when you’re done.”

“You sure? How do you know I’ll bring them back?”

She leans on the counter and talks in a low voice. “This town is small enough to fit in my purse. If I need to hunt you down, I will.” She ends the sentiment with a wink.

“Fair enough,” I laugh.

We say our goodbyes, and I head back to my car. When I’m back inside, I pull the orange pill bottle out of the center console where I left it.

Maybe these things are already bringing me some good luck.

Chapter Forty-two

Shane

“Have I told you how beautiful you look?” I ask Jenna as we get ready to go out on our date.

“About ten times,” she says with a warm smile.

“Well, Sunshine, before the night is over, prepare to hear it another ten times.” I pull her close and give her a couple of soft kisses.

She wraps her arms around my neck and parts her lips, inviting my tongue in to dance with hers. My hands grasp her hips and pull her as close as possible. It would be so easy to get lost in this moment and take her to bed right now—especially since now that we are both working, we ultimately see each other less.

But I’ve planned a whole evening for us, so I break the kiss.
