We begin to kiss again, this time showing no sign of slowing down. Our tongues dance for what seems like hours. We don’t take it any further, though. Call me old-fashioned, but I feel weird having sex with my new boyfriend in my deceased husband’s mother’s house.

When we finally do come up for air, I take a moment just to enjoy being in his arms. The arms that have made me feel so safe in so many unknown and scary situations.

After getting this Earth-shattering news yesterday, there’s one thing that I didn’t account for…how having Jonas by my side pushes me out of my comfort zone and gives me the strength and courage to do things I didn’t think possible. Although I have learned that I am quite capable of handling things on my own, I’d much rather do it with this amazing human being by my side.

“Hey, Joe?”

“Yeah?”

“There’s something I have to do. Will you come with me?”

Chapter Forty-seven

Jonas

Looking next to me, I see that Andi can’t stop biting her fingernails. She’s bitten them down so far I’m worried she’s going to make her fingers bleed.

“What if they aren’t happy to see me?” She asks frantically, referring to her biological parents we are on our way to meet.

After much deliberation, Andi decided that going to meet them is what she wants. And although I have no idea what we are walking into, I fully support her decision.

This might all be a moot point, though, because when we tried calling the phone number on the piece of paper Cheryl had given her, the number was no longer in service. So, we have no idea if they are still at this address.

But my woman is determined to find out, so I’m right here with her. Cheryl let us borrow her car, and the GPS tells us that we are about three minutes away.

Andi is looking at me, and I realize she asked me something, but I can’t remember what it was for the life of me.

“What did you say, baby?”

She sighs. “What if they aren’t happy to see me?”

I pull her hand up to my mouth to give it a gentle kiss before saying, “They are going to be thrilled to see you. Who wouldn’t be? You’re pretty awesome.”

She rolls her eyes. “Although I usually love it when you say all the right things, this time, I need a little bit of honesty. What if they aren’t here?”

“Then, we keep looking. We hire a private investigator to track them down.”

“And what if they aren’t happy to see me?” She asks. “What do we do then?”

“Then, we go home and have a couple of drinks. We fall in bed together, and I remind you over and over again how much of a goddess you are. And we go on with our lives one day at a time.”

That seems to calm her down enough to keep her fingers out of her mouth until we are pulling up in the driveway. The house is a nice one. Definitely more than I could afford without putting the ranch up as collateral.

Once the car is in park, I walk over to her side of the car and open the door for her. She takes my hand, and I can feel it shaking within mine.

Slowly, we walk toward the front of the house. It feels like it’s a mile until we get to the large burgundy-colored door.

“You ready?” I ask as we step up onto the porch.

“No. I don’t know. Just knock.”

Before she can change her mind, I give a solid three knocks.

“Coming!” A male voice yells from inside the house.

Andi looks so pale that she might throw up. I give her hand a gentle squeeze, trying to calm her down.

The door swings open, and a middle-aged man with salt and pepper hair and caramel-colored eyes stands in the doorway.
