Sarah’s tears came harder and faster as she starts to sob. Ken rubs her knee and picks up telling the story where she left off.

“Thank goodness we got home when we did. Thank God you didn’t drown. But we would have never forgiven ourselves if something happened to you. We decided to give you up for adoption. We thought that you were still so young, and there were so many couples out there looking to adopt that there was no way that you wouldn’t find a loving home. Originally, they found a wonderful couple who wanted to adopt you. They asked for a closed adoption so that we would have no contact with you. We had no idea that they backed out of the adoption until years later. We don’t know why we weren’t contacted because we would have taken you home in a heartbeat had we known you ended up in the Foster Care system. When we looked into it, we were told it was a ‘clerical error.’ Bullshit if you ask me.”

Now, all three of them are crying. Sniffles echo throughout the room.

Sarah says, “We had no idea. I swear to you, Andi, if we had known, we would have moved heaven and hell to get you back. We thought you were happy living with a family who was taking care of you. I’m so sorry. You will never be able to understand how sorry I am.”

“I understand,” Andi says meekly. “I just always thought you didn’t want me.”

Both of her parents get up off of the opposite couch and kneel in front of her, pulling her into a hug.

Ken says, “We wanted you so bad. But we just wanted you to have a good life.”

They hold each other for a while. Although I’m not a part of this, it’s heartwarming to see Andi find a piece of herself that has been missing for so long.

When they release, Andi looks over at me and back at her parents. “Oh, I am so rude. This is Jonas, the man I’m in love with.”

They both look confused since her husband showed up here all those years ago, and I’m definitely not him.

Andi continues. “Michael died in a car crash, and I found out some not-so-nice things about him after his death. I moved to start a new life, and Jonas has been wonderful to me ever since.”

Ken stands up and holds out his hand. “Well then, it’s nice to meet you, Jonas. I’m glad Andi has you.”

I stand up and shake his hand. “Jonas Mitchell. It’s nice to meet you.”

Andi spits out, “I don’t understand why Michael wouldn’t tell me about you. I mean, I don’t know why he made this decision without so much as talking to me first.”

Sarah says, “Well, when he called, he said that it hurt you that we couldn’t take care of you, but…”

“But what?” Andi asks.

Suddenly, the front door opens, and a young woman bursts in. “Mom? Mom, is she here?” The woman asks.

Sarah says, “Andi, this is our daughter, Kris. This is your sister.”

Chapter Forty-eight

Andi

Sister?

My mouth hangs open so far I look like a damn cartoon character.

I have a sister? And parents who seem like genuinely good people?

This is a whole hell of a lot of information to take in.

Ken asks, “Andi, are you okay?”

“Yeah, just trying to process everything.”

He stands up. “Kris, let’s go in the other room for a minute and let Sarah and Andi talk. We just now told her that you exist.”

The girl nods and followers her dad.

Our dad.

When they are gone, I ask, “So, I have a sister.”
