We talk for a couple more minutes before I walk over to where Jonas is playing with Mikey.

“This has been fun, bud. Let’s do it again sometime,” Jonas says, making the little boy smile.

He stands up, and I wrap my arms around his neck and pull him for a kiss.

“What was that for?” He grins.

“For being you. And for letting me do this my way without ever trying to call the shots. For being here with me during such an important time. For loving me the way you do.”

“Well, for all that, I deserve another kiss.” He leans down and presses his lips to mine, and the butterflies in my stomach erupt.

When he pulls back, I say, “Let’s go home, cowboy.”

“It’s kind of late. You sure you don’t want to just catch an early flight?”

“No, we can take a late one. I’m excited to get home. Toourhome. I don’t want to wait one more second to begin our lives together.”

He kisses me once more, and I never look back.

Chapter Forty-nine

Jonas

Six months later.

“Will you stop standing by the door? They’ll be here soon. You’ll get your nose prints on it like Beau does,” I say to Andi.

“It’s a big day, Jonas! Why aren’t you more excited?” She dances around like a little kid who has to pee.

I pull her close to me, wrapping one hand around the back of her neck while I let my mouth devour hers.

“I am extremely excited. But around you, I’m alwaysexcited,” I quip.

“You are such a dirty cowboy,” she moans, biting her bottom lip. “But we don’t have time! Besides, you already rearranged my insides this morning in the shower. Remember?”

“Oh, I remember. I just can’t seem to keep my hands off my sexy-as-hell wife.” I swat her ass, and she squeals.

The past six months with this woman have been the best months of my life. When we got back from Chicago, Andi told me about the deal she made to help the ranch get more business. Since then, the ranch continues to grow. She’s doing all sorts of marketing and continuously making new deals while I work to keep our quality up.

Her marketing prowess is being noticed around town, and she’s helped Tracy launch an online platform to sell some of the stuff from her store, and she is helping Nicole start her own baking catering company. And she refuses to take a cent from either one of them. Her selflessness amazes me every single day.

She immediately moved in with me once we got back, and we keep the small house on the property for when her parents or her sister come to visit…which they’ve already done three times. We’ve also been back to Chicago to spend time with her and Cheryl…and even Stacy and Mikey.

Like I said, selfless.

We got married a couple of months later- a small ceremony at the courthouse. Andi insisted she didn’t want anything fancy and didn’t want to wait any longer.

“When you know, you know,” she’d say, repeating my own line back to me.

We do eventually want to adopt, but we decided to dip our toes into the pond first.

Which brings us to today.

A blue sedan pulls up in the driveway, and Andi rushes out the screen door. A woman steps out of the car and opens the door to the backseat. Two small boys, ages 3 and 5, step out. Their names are Kyle and Keith, and we are their new foster parents.

Their mom is dead, and their dad is locked up for embezzlement, but the boys haven’t been in the system for very long.

I walk out behind Andi and introduce myself to them. They’re both shy, avoiding eye contact, but they greet me all the same.
