Jared looks at me. “Marketing, huh? I might need your services soon. With Winter coming up, the construction business always slows way down. I’m looking into expanding into doing some smaller remodeling jobs, but I need to get the word out. Do you think you’d be able to help with that?”

“Sure,” I smile. “Just let me know whenever you’re ready to sit down and brainstorm ideas.”

I don’t know if his family is just being friendly because I have something going on with Jonas, but I figure I really can’t turn down work of any kind. I can’t imagine how many Marketing opportunities there are in this small town.

I’m thankful that no one asks me any more questions about why I decided to uproot my life and move from California to Tennessee. Instead, Jenna tries making her point heard again about the older guy she wants to start dating.

Much to her disappointment, both of her brothers take their mother’s side and promise to beat the guy to a bloody pulp if he comes anywhere near her. Defeated, she spends the rest of the meal sighing loud enough for everyone to hear, but no one seems to give her any attention.

Finally, she asks, “May I be excused?”

“For Heaven’s sake, yes,” Annie says.

Jenna gets up from the table and puts her plate in the sink before exiting the kitchen. Moments later, we can hear her stomping up the stairs to what I assume is her bedroom.

Annie looks at Jared, “See what you have to look forward to in a few years.”

“Don’t remind me. I’ll be sending Macey over here to live with you.”

Jonas speaks up, “Eh, Jenna has always been a bit of a wild child. Macey is a good girl. I’m sure she will be at least a little more tame.”

“Speaking of a wild child, I talked to Jessie earlier today.” When Annie speaks the words, both brothers go silent.

Neither one of them so much as acknowledge the mention of their youngest brother.

Annie must see their reactions, but she doesn’t say anything. Instead, she changes the subject to some sort of Fall festival happening in town within the next few weeks. Honestly, I don’t hear much of what she’s saying because Jonas’s hand, which has been firmly placed on my knee most of the night, is now running up my thigh. His fingers lightly graze my skin as he gets closer and closer to my panties that are growing wetter by the minute.

My mind floods with thoughts of what Jonas will do when he gets in between my legs later. The two times we have had sex so far have been the two best sexual experiences of my life, and something tells me that Jonas Mitchell has a lot more to show me.

And I’m going to let him. When he brings out that dirty talking mouth, it makes me want to do anything and everything he says.

I’m pulled out of my thoughts when Annie says, “Boys, I need you to go outside and take a look at my car. It’s making a funny noise. My keys are by the front door.”

They exchange a confused glance as though neither of them knows why she’s asking them to do it, but they get up and start to make their way outside nonetheless.

I’m not quite sure if I should follow, but when Annie begins speaking to me after the guys have left the room, I see that this was her plan all along.

“Andi,” she begins.

But I stop her. “Annie, if you are worried about me taking advantage of your son, I promise that isn’t the case. All of my stuff got delayed in my move, and Jonas was just being nice by letting me stay at his place. And somewhere over the past few days, I guess I kind of started to fall for him.” I say the words, and it’s the first time I’ve admitted them out loud, but it’s true. I never thought I would fall for anyone again after Michael’s betrayal.

“That’s not what I was going to say, dear, but that’s good to know.” She smiles.

“Oh, sorry.” My cheeks flame with embarrassment.

“Don’t be. I’m glad to know how you feel about him. I just wanted to say that I don’t know what brought you here all the way across the country, and you don’t have to tell me. But something in your eyes tells me that a whole lot of hurt brought you here. From a woman who has been hurt more times than I can count, just know that I’m here if you ever decide you need someone to talk to. I understand what it feels like to feel like you’re all alone in this great big, ol’ world. And I know you have Jonas, but there are some things maybe a man just wouldn’t understand. Just know that no matter what happens between you and my son, you will always have a place to go and someone to listen if you need it.” She lays her hand on top of mine.

Tears sting behind my eyes as I do my best to force them away.

“Honey, what’s wrong?” She asks.

“Nothing. Really nothing. I just can’t believe that you’re being so nice to someone you don’t even know.”

She waves her hand in front of her as if brushing away my comment. “Honey, everyone deserves a chance. And here, in this house, you will get that chance.”

“Thank you,” I say with a smile. “You have no idea how much that means to me.”

About that time, the guys walk back in, talking amongst themselves. Annie quickly gets up and starts talking to them about something giving me a moment to compose myself.
