A lot of it is the same information that Jonas gave me last night. Long hours, and sometimes unconventional ones. Not all years are lucrative. And it helps to have a good team of people surrounding you, which segues into the next portion of the article.

“Find yourself a good, supportive woman to have by your side.”

Upon further reading, it’s evident that the author of this article thinks that his woman should stay home barefoot and pregnant. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for being supportive, but does that mean a woman should lose her own identity in the process?

I was supportive of Michael’s career for years while putting my own life and goals on hold, and look where it got me.

Still, I can’t help wondering if Jonas pictures himself with a woman who has dinner ready and waiting when he gets home.

A woman like Nicole…

The thought churns my stomach.

I mean, I can cook.

Okay, not really. However, I haven’t really tried. Michael tended to cook when he was home. Usually, it was something extremely healthy. I guess it was part of his master plan to make me drop a few. Of course, he would go out of town, and I’d order takeout almost every night.

But how hard can it really be to cook a meal?

I decide that it’s a good night to do something special for Jonas. He’s done so much for me already.

A good dinner, and an even better night in bed, sound perfect.

I take a moment to gather my thoughts and make a plan before pulling out my phone.

I type out a text to Jonas.

Me: You mind if I leave a little early? I need to run an errand.

It’s only a few seconds before a reply comes through.

Jonas: Of course, baby. You don’t have to ask. I’ll see you back at home later.

Home.

That word.

It catches me off guard but simultaneously gives me a renewed sense of hope. It warms my heart in a way that I haven’t felt since Cheryl invited me to move in with them all those years ago.

I guess deep down inside, I’m still just that lost foster-kid desperately searching for where she belongs.

Shaking my head, I get out of my fog. There’s no time to delve into my many issues.

There’s work to do.

“Thanks so much, Annie,” I say before hanging up the phone. I finish writing down the directions she just gave me for her famous fried chicken.

At first, she balked when I asked for her special recipe, but when I told her I wanted to make Jonas dinner, her demeanor instantly changed.

She gave me step-by-step instructions that seem so easy I’m positive I won’t mess it up.

I step out of my SUV that’s been parked in front of The Stop ‘N Go while I talked to Annie and got everything written down.

I glance over my notes one more time before heading inside.

Once I’m in the store, I begin grabbing things and checking them off my list. I’m just getting everything since I don’t know what Jonas has already.
