I think for a moment. “No, he doesn’t pressure me into anything. He’s really great about that.”

“It sounds like you’re in your own head. Some people can meet and get married in a week and live happily ever after. Some people are together for years trying to make sure it’s right, and they still end up breaking up. Stop trying to put a label on it. Every relationship is different. Don’t let everyone else’s standards dictate your life.”

“That’s good advice,” I say. “You should write a book on love or something.”

She laughs, almost spitting out her drink. “More likewhat not to do in love. Over the years, I have just learned not to care what people think. I worry about me and mine, and everyone else can just piss off. If someone doesn’t like the way I do something, I just don’t care.”

I don’t know that I necessarily care what other people think. That’s not it. But I need to stop second-guessing myself. Maybe I just need to go with the flow and see what happens.

Chapter Thirty-eight

Jonas

Agiant smile crosses my lips as I look over at Andi in my truck's passenger seat. We’re on our way to our cabin in the mountains for her surprise birthday trip. She wasn’t feeling the country music I had turned on, so I let her pick. She plugged in her phone, turned on her 80’s playlist, and has been singing and dancing ever since.

And it’s adorable.

She’s asked to wear one of my baseball caps, which just adds to the whole picture for me.

We brought Beau, who is looking out the back window watching the world go by.

The past week has been amazing. There has just been an absolute ease to our relationship. We work together during the day, each doing our own things but checking in whenever we can. In the evenings, we alternate between her house and mine. Usually, I cook, but sometimes we order in. We talk, laugh, cuddle, and eventually fall asleep in each other’s arms.

It seems like whatever was holding her back is gone, or at least not rearing its ugly head like it once was. The way we have been, you’d think we’d been together for years.

She’s still been on her period, so the sex has been a no-go, but that’s alright. I’m hoping that this weekend, we can make up for lost time. If not, her company is enough to keep me going. That and jerking off in the shower. After all, a man can only stare at that juicy ass in leggings for so long before his hard-on refuses to go away.

“How much further?” Andi asks, impatiently.

“Just a few minutes. Our turnoff is up here a mile or so.”

Once we get off the main road and begin trekking up the steep, curvy mountain road, she turns down the music, and her singing quiets. She looks out the window with Beau taking in the surroundings.

I will forever maintain that the Smokey Mountains in the Fall is one of the most beautiful things one could ever see. And I made sure the cabin I rented had the perfect view to show off that beauty. Give me a weekend in the mountains over a beach any day.

I switch the truck to four-wheel drive as we continue to drive further up.

“You sure this is safe?” She asks, eyeing the narrowing road.

“Yes, baby. We will be just fine.”

I swear she’s holding her breath until we get to the top, only breathing normally when I pull into the parking space in front of the cabin.

“It’s so nice,” she says as we step out of the truck.

“What were you expecting?”

She shrugs. “I don’t know. You say cabin, and I’m thinking a run-down old shack in the middle of the woods somewhere.”

“Baby, we are in Gatlinburg. It’s definitely a tourism-oriented town. Most cabins are decked out with luxury stuff to get people to stay there instead of the thousand other cabins. Come on, let’s go inside and check it out. I’ll be back for the bags.”

I take her hand and lead her up the porch steps. I enter the four-digit code that the owner gave me, and the door unlocks. When we walk inside, Andi’s mouth drops.

We walk into the large, open floor plan, which opens into a living room, kitchen, and dining area. Vaulted ceilings accentuate the giant space, along with a massive stone fireplace on one end of the room. The back wall is nothing but windows, which show our fantastic view, but she seems too busy focusing on everything else to notice that just yet.

“Holy shit, this place is huge!” She exclaims. “We certainly don’t need this much space.”

“True. But I picked it for the view.”
