Rude Awakening

Present Day
“Gah…” I groaned. “Who?”
“Ah,” the assailant spoke. “You again?”
The voice…sounded familiar.
“This must be fate,” the assailant continued. “I’ll let you go this time.”
My eyes slowly closed.
I woke up with a start. I was out of breath, and a quick scan of my surroundings revealed that I was in a hospital room.
I touched my head and wiped away the beads of sweat that had formed.
With my memories back and combined with the ones I had made in the past two years and at the Wolf Pack, it felt like I was in a dream. A very long dream.
I turned to my side to see Hunter half asleep.
He opened his eyes, and as he made contact with mine, he brightened up.
“Dude, thank God,” Hunter sighed. “Mrs. Williams found you and brought you here.”
“Ah, the old neighbor, extend my greetings,” I said. “Make preparations. We’ll be returning to the old house soon for a short visit.”
“The old…” Hunter was confused, but realization slowly hit him. “Don’t tell me.”
“Yes, Hunter, my friend, I remember everything,” I said.
“Ah…that’s great then. It felt exhausting trying to act like everything was okay.” He chuckled nervously, “This may seem weird to ask, but do you remember how you lost your memories?”
“I was on my way to a meeting. The driver followed a route that...” I stopped.
Something was off about the whole situation.
If I was in an accident and lost my memories, why didn’t Hunter, who knew about my past, tell me anything about who I really was?
Thinking about it critically, it did seem weird that he could afford a lot of things, although he claimed to be a freelance writer.
“Nick? Nick? Is there something wrong?” he asked.
