“No.” I chuckled lightly. “Where’s my phone?”

“Over there,” he pointed. “I’ll get it for you.”

He handed me the phone. “Aria called. I told her you were here. She’ll be here soon.”

Ah, that’s true. Aria was still my girlfriend. My memories still felt a little jumbled.

“So you don’t remember how you lost your memories?” he asked again.

“Yeah, I don’t remember. I just keep stopping at the car ride,” I said.

“So you didn’t see the assailant?” he asked.

“Assailant? Was I attacked?”

His eyes darted around, “No, I meant when you were attacked last night. Did you get a good look at the assailant?”

“No, why?” I asked.

“Well, the police will be here,” he said as he rubbed the back of his head. “They believe that the attack is connected to the string of murders in the area.”

“That makes sense,” I sighed. “When you see these things on TV, you’d assume they won’t be a problem because you seem untouchable.”

“I know, right? All it takes is a brush with the real deal to remind you that, most times, your life isn’t in your hands,” he said.

“I feel it’s strange, though,” I said. “The assailant spoke to me.”

“What did he say to you?”

“He said something about fate and letting me go this time,” I said, then turned to him, watching Hunter’s reaction. “Isn’t that weird? It was almost like he had met me somewhere before, right?”

“Yeah…weird,” he replied nervously.

He obviously knew something and was doing a terrible job at covering it up.

Time to push it a little further.

“How’s Blake?” I asked, and he sat straight up.

“Eh? I wouldn’t know, haven’t been in touch with him for a while,” he replied.

“So you’re not with Parker Corp anymore?” I raised a brow.

“No, after the accident with you falling from the stairs, I decided to stay by your side,” he said.

“Hmmm…I think it’s strange how my darling brother didn’t come looking for me,” I said. “Thank you for staying by my side Hunter. You’ve watched over me properly these past 2 years.”

“Hehe, it’s nothing. I just wanted you to have a taste of the normal world,” he said. “You know I wasn’t born into wealth like you and Blake were. I have had to do a lot of things just to survive and remain significant to those who need my services.”

“Why did you want the change of pace for me?” I asked. “I was perfectly fine being on top of the world.”

“Well, I guess I wanted you to see the world differently,” he replied. “Besides, without you getting to experience a normal life, I don’t think you would have been able to meet Aria Wolfe and truly fall in love.“

His words were sincere. His eyes didn’t dart around. Something told me that although he was involved in the coup that got me removed as president, he didn’t want to follow through with his plans.

“I think I would’ve managed fine without you helping out,” I said. “Aria was there during my father’s funeral. It would’ve taken a little more time, but the both of us would have been together. I think it’s fate.”

“No, Nick, the playboy you were then was unwilling to settle,” he said. “I think losing your memories and starting from the ground up was a better route to find your true fate.”
