“So what would you have me do to help?” she asked.

“Well, we’re not sure how much time Nick would spend in the city,” I said. “And we’re not sure how much his younger brother knows about Nick. So I was wondering if you could keep a lookout for Nick for me.”

“Alright, I’ll notify my people,” she said.

“Thank you so much, mom,” I said with relief. “What would I do without you?”

“Whatwouldyou do without me?” she retorted. “I’m just satisfied watching over you.”

“I appreciate that, mom.”

“Also, I’m calling off the suitor thing,” she said.

“Really?” I was shocked. My mother had never called anything off if she had set her mind to it.

“Yeah, I am,” she confirmed.

“But why?”

“Well, let’s say I’m just leveling the playing field,” she replied.

“The playing field?” I asked.

“Don’t worry about it, sweetie. Just be sure to stay by Nick’s side when the time comes,” she advised.

I didn’t quite get it, but at least I didn’t have to handle three men I knew next to jack squat about.

Now all I had to do was hold down the fort while Nick tried to get his company back. To think that feeble intern from earlier was actually a billionaire in disguise. Well, not in disguise per se, but you get the idea.

Nick

Georgetown, South Carolina.

35 miles away from Myrtle Beach.

This was where Parker Corp’s headquarters was located, and it was through here that my war began.

I waited at the meetup point for Matilda to arrive.

“Nick?” a voice called.

I turned and saw Matilda. The look on her face was as if she was suspicious of who I was.

I waved at her and smiled.

She let out a sigh of relief, and then a smile formed.

“I’m sorry I looked skeptical,” she said as she approached me with her arms open.

I accepted her embrace.

“It’s okay, I understand,” I said.

“I missed you. I held in for so long,” she said.

“Thank you for being strong,” I commended her.

She broke the embrace, and I noticed the tears that had dripped from the side of her face.
