Family Ties

Nick

“It is with great heaviness of heart that we lay to sleep, James Parker,” the priest said. “He was husband to Layla Parker, father to Nick and Blake Parker. President and founder of Parker Corp. May his soul rest in peace.”

It was my father’s funeral. I was surprised at the caliber of people who had turned up. Monarchs, political powerhouses, business tycoons, I think I noticed some shady people involved in underground businesses.

Oh well, it was up to Blake and me to live up to, and beyond, the legacy, he had left behind.

“Shall we call on his first son, Nick Parker, for some final words,” the priest called.

Ah, here goes nothing.'

Applause accompanied my walk up to the pulpit as I steadied my breathing and mind.

I got on the podium and took in the faces of those present. My mother, with her eyes swollen from tears. My brother who looked unbothered for some odd reason, my secretary, who had written the speech, and most of the staff from my company.

For some reason, it felt like a weight of responsibility was placed on my shoulder.

Well, the people were waiting.

“My father always told me that a man isn't measured by how much wealth he has but by the wealth of his network. Seeing allof you here, honoring him would surely make his words a reality. My family and I are grateful for all of you,” I said.

There were murmurs of agreement.

“Workaholic that he was, father never turned anyone who needed his help away, even at his old age, it saddens me to say that may have been the case of his demise,” I said with as much emotion as I could've. “It didn't matter to him. However, as long as he was making an impact in the lives of those who needed his help, he would continue to reach out.”

More words of agreement…a few sobs here and there.

“Words can not describe how much I feel crushed by the sudden responsibility bestowed upon my brother and me to lead his legacy,” I continued. “However, with your help and continuous support, I see Parker Corp becoming a force to be reckoned with in the business sector, with all of us playing our roles the best way we can. I look forward to working with you all.”

There was a round of applause and cheers from everyone.

I raised my hands to calm them down, “Thank you all.”

I turned to my father's coffin. “Father, on behalf of Blake and I and all your executives at Parker Corp, I ask that your wisdom continue to guide us even after death. Rest easy, Dad. Your legacy is in good hands.”

The crowd was overwhelmed by my display of humility and oratory skills. I spent half the rest of the day shaking hands and accepting compliments.

“You did well,” I said to my secretary. “The crowd ate it up.”

“Thank you, sir, but it was mostly dependent on your ability to pull it off,” she said. “I'm honored to be of service to you.”

“You do have a way with words. Give me three reasons why I shouldn't bend you over my desk right now,” I smirked.

“A good reason could be that today is meant for grievances,” a voice said.

I turned and saw Aisha linking arms with an older man. I recognized him as her father.

“Thank you for coming, your majesty, and for bringing your daughter,” I said as I bowed.

“Raise your head. We're business partners now,” he said with a smile. “Please accept my condolences. I pray Allah puts a smile on you and your family's faces.”

“Amen,” I responded.

“Well, I'll leave you two young ones to it,” he said. “I'll go speak with your mother.”

“Much appreciated, sir, and thank you once again,” I said.
