“Sounds like he has a ring of girls up there, too. Smuggles them in via the water.” Marshal pounded the steering wheel. “Your girl is smart. She got him talking while your phone was connected to Hunter’s.”

“My wife,” I said, resting my eyes, just for a second. Damn head was throbbing. She was my wife. Strong and resourceful.

“About that…” Marshal’s voice cut off.

“What?”

“We’re still checking it out, but he’s claiming she’s married to him. That he has the legal documents to prove it.”

I sat up. “What?”

“Like I said, we’ll check it out. We’re going to let them make it to the border so he can present their paperwork. We have some guys there already, taking over the location.”

“Son of a bitch.” My marriage wasn’t legal? “She’s my wife. I don’t care what any piece of paper says, Marshal. Not one bit.”

“I hear ya. She doesn’t really have accurate paperwork as Sarah Ryder anyway, so…we’ll iron it all out. I promise, Drey. I’ll do right by you.”

“I know.” Didn’t matter. Sarah was mine. No matter what.

“We’ve got recordings on everything he’s said to her. That, alone, is enough to rain holy hell down on everything he has. And that guy at the coffee shop. He’s in custody. He’ll be singing, I’m sure.”

“Hunt, Angelina, Lizzie, and Damon are safe. Right?”

He dipped his head. “Two guards on Damon, Hunt’s with Angelina and Lizzie along with two more guards. There’s no way anyone’s getting through them. You know that.”

“Bill?”

“Got eyes on him, too. He’s fine.” Marshal sat up. “Okay. We’re closing in.” He tapped his ear. “They’ve pulled off to a gas station.”

“What? Why the hell would they do that?”

“Got me. Thought he’d blast through the border right away.”

“Unless he’s on to you guys.” My heart thudded my chest so hard my head no longer hurt. “What’s happening on Hunter’s phone? Can you hear that?” I sat up, suddenly very uneasy. “What if he gets to Canada? Does that mean we can’t get him?”

“No. They aren’t a non-extradition country.” Marshal flinched. “Shit.”

“What? Damn it, what’s happening?”

He looked at me, probably longer than he should, considering he was driving. “He found the phone.”

Chapter Fifty

Sarah

“We’regoingtofreezeto death,” I said, hugging my coat to my body, hoping to trap some heat.

“Again. Your fault,” Nicco said from behind me. Damn asshole had a gun pointed at me. Sure, I was wearing the thickest coat I’d ever seen, but I knew that wouldn’t stop a bullet.

Then again, I could make a break for it and let him shoot me. If I died, I died. At least I wouldn’t be in his hands anymore. Anything was better than that.

No. I had to trust what Hunter heard over the phone was enough for Marshal and his guys to get something planned.

Hopefully.

“It’s only a couple miles to a crossing point. I have people there, waiting for us.” He nudged my back with the gun. “Faster.”

“Don’t like the cold? Too much for your thin skin?”Good. I hope his pecker freezes off!
