Chapter Thirty-One

Drey

Thedreadedsilence.Iknew that would happen when I told her about the no-sex decision.

We strolled along the sidewalk in silence. There were only a few people braving the subzero temperatures by meandering on the sidewalks. With my free hand I held my cup of coffee, thankful for the warmth leaking through my gloves.

She had to be thinking I was a freak. Or…hell, her facial expressions were stone-cold right now, I couldn’t even guess what she was thinking.

“I’ve never met a man like you, Drey.”

“Is that good or bad?” I took a sip of my coffee.

“Both.”

“I’m not sure I should be happy or upset by that.”

“Good, because…I haven’t had much good in my life when it comes to men.”

“I like where this is going.”

“Bad because—”

“This part isn’t so much fun.”

She waggled our connected hands and sipped her hot cider. “Bad, because, I’m…not good enough for you.”

“Back to that, are we?”

“Drey…I—” She let out a long breath, and the white plumed before her face. “I’m trying to be good enough for you. I…started talking to Jenna.”

“Angelina’s Jenna?”

“Yeah. I…you know what I told you in the movie theater? Well…there’s more. Drey, there’s so much more.”

“And like I said in the movie theater; I want to know. It won’t change how I feel.”

Her eyes darkened. “Don’t be so sure.”

If she only knew nothing would shock me. After watching the mother of my child die from an overdose and my baby die shortly after…nothing could be worse. Absolutely nothing. I loved this girl. This beautiful, broken woman.

“I know somebody hurt you, Sarah. And I’m guessing it’s up Angelina’s alley from the way you avoid talking about it, and…that night terror of yours. You can tell me.” Though I couldn’t promise I wouldn’t want to hunt down the bastard and kill him.

“It wasn’t just someone.” She swallowed hard. “It was many people. Guys…well, and some females.”

My turn to swallow hard. Guys and girls? What the hell—

“For six years.”

“Mother fu—”

She looked up at me. “I was a sex slave, Drey. My mom sold me when I was fifteen.”

A chill stormed up my legs and twisted through my gut until it froze my entire body. I couldn’t take another step. Sex slave? Six years?

Six fucking years of hell?

She released my hand and adjusted her stocking cap, pulling it down. She peeked at me from beneath her long lashes.
