He sneered at me. Walker stood tall, almost cocky, next to Nicco. “I knew I recognized you.”

“And I was very happy to get a call. I’ve been missing my prize possession.”

No!Son of a bitch.

“Why do I have a feeling you’re involved with this shit?” I snarled.

“Mom got stoned. Accidentally died. Son went a little…crazy. Had to teach him a lesson.” Walker shrugged.

I backed away, my mind whirling with options. He wouldn’t do anything here, would he? Cameras, doctors around. Please God.

“Come home, babe, and no one else will get hurt,” Nicco said, his voice calm and even as if he were talking about the weather.

“Home,” I laughed. “Fuck you.”

“You remember how I deal with those who don’t cooperate.”

Hell yeah, I remembered, but there was no way he’d try anything here. No way.

Nicco stepped forward, reaching for me. The door beside me burst open, and a nurse stepped between us.

I turned around and ran. I knew the hospital well enough to know this hall wrapped around to the front desk, then looped back to ICU. Cops were there. No way would they try anything with cops around.

And I needed time to think.

Shit.

Bam, I ran into someone else. I needed to get my head out of my ass right now.

“Sarah!” Hunter steadied me by my shoulders. “What’s wrong?”

“Um. Nothing. I—” I pushed off him. “I have to…shit. I need to go. Stay here with Drey. I’ll be ba—just stay here.”

I whirled around and busted through the doors. I needed to get the hell away from everyone. I couldn’t bring this trouble down on Hunter and Angelina. Damn it, Lizzie, too. No. Trouble would follow me, away from Drey and everyone else.

“Sarah!” Hunter called after me.

Tears bit at my eyes as the cold air blasted against my exposed skin. The last thing I wanted to do was exactly what needed to be done. My engagement ring reflected the street lamps, almost mocking me as I sprinted. I was stupid to think I could do this.

And my stupidity could hurt everyone I loved.

Chapter Forty

Drey

“Comeon, man.”Isqueezed Damon’s hand again. I’d been in here for more than thirty minutes and not one movement. Nothing. “You’re tougher than a crowbar. Suck it up. You can’t fucking die on me!”

The door behind me opened. “Sorry, just here to check vitals.” A nurse with two long blond braids eased the door shut.

“How is he?”

“Let’s have a look here.”

I stepped back, glancing out the door. I wanted to get to Sarah, but Damon needed me. What if he woke up, and I was gone? I had to let him know I was here for him.

“Not much change. We’d like to see the swelling improve. Doctor will come by in about fifteen minutes on his rounds. Do you need anything?”

“Other than for him to wake up? No. Can my…fiancée…” God I loved calling her that… “Come in here? She’s family. We’re all Damon has.”
