The guy stopped a few feet from us.

“He’s my fiancé’s brother,” I said. “Can you tell us anything?”

“He was awake only a few seconds after I found him.”

“Did he say anything?” I asked.

“Can’t really comment.”

“Come on, man,” Bill yelled. “The kid might die!”

The cop raised his hand. “Look, Bill, I know you. You try to help these kids. You got my back, right?”

“Always.”

“It was a gang job. Something big went down. We’re still putting things together.”

“Mother fu—” Hunter clamped his jaw down when Bill grabbed his arm.

“Hang tight. We’ll get with Drey when we know more.”

The cop took off down the hall and went through the doors to the ICU. Probably to guard Damon. Or try to question him.

“Drey’s going to lose it if Damon dies,” Hunter said. “That gang has taken so much from him already.”

“Amberly.” I faced Bill. “And you, Bill, it was Amberly and you who turned it around for Drey. And you were trying to help Damon.”

“Drey’s like my son, Sarah. But Hunter’s right. Drey’s going to take this hard.”

“Hunter. You have that FBI guy, Marshal. Isn’t he like your step-dad now?” I asked. “Can he help? I mean…that shithead, Walker, he can’t get away with this.”

“I’ll see what I can do,” Hunter said, running his fingers through his hair. “It’s not his specialty but maybe he can pull some strings. What are you thinking?”

“I don’t know. Aren’t there, like, video cameras everywhere now? Street corners. I’m no cop or anything, but someone must have seen something. We have to do everything we can for Drey.”

“I’ll start working on details on his mother.” Bill stomped away while Hunter pulled his cell phone out of his pocket.

“Hunter…we have to help him.” Finally the tears spilled. I hated crying, but I felt so helpless. I despised that feeling.

Big arms encompassed me, and I rested my head on Hunter’s chest. “We’ll figure it out.”

I pushed off Hunter, needing to do something. To walk or… “I’ll get us some coffee. Meet me in the waiting room?”

“Yeah.” He patted my shoulder.

I stepped away, bound to find some caffeine. I needed to keep busy. Drey might want something, too, when he came out. Turning the corner, I rammed right into someone.

“Oh, sorry. I—”

“If it isn’t my little baby.”

My stomach clenched at the wretched voice slicing through my awareness. Bile stung so hard and fast I coughed as I pushed away. Nicco, flanked by a guy I didn’t recognize…wait, that was Walker next to Nicco.

Fucking Walker.

“You’re looking good, babe.”

“Don’t call me that.”
