“Speaking of Wyatt, where is he?”

“Last minute meeting popped up and he couldn’t make it, not the first time he’s had to cancel plans but I understand he’s busy.”

“How about you? Still going to the center every day?”

“Most days…it’s great seeing the kids growing and getting more confident in themselves and not looking so afraid every time something hits the ground.”

“I know what you mean. I’ve had patients before that were afraid to admit they were being abused and then something changes and the light suddenly appears. Well, everything looks good, try and stop stressing so much it’s not good for you. I don’t see any reason to worry. You’re young, healthy, and you’ve got a husband who loves you. Have fun at your party tonight.”

“Thanks, Nora,” she said leaving the office. Stop stressing? Impossible…at least until she knew that Haley and Jess were okay.

They were having the dinner at her in-laws’ home; their cook had taken over all the preparations and informed her to simply show up. Wyatt was quiet when he appeared at the house to change and she didn’t feel like gabbing about nonsense. She still hadn’t heard from Haley and her worry had led her to pick off the polish from her nails twice already.

It wasn’t like Haley to ignore her, even if she was running she would have told her where she was going or at the very least that she was. Something was wrong, she knew it, but she couldn’t do anything about it tonight…everyone was expecting her to show up smiling, especially once they saw the present Wyatt had given her but she knew she wouldn’t be able to keep up pretenses for too long. Her mother knew her worried face and she didn’t want a whole drawn out Q and A session about what was going on.

As dinner proceeded, she knew why she was being quiet but Wyatt was another story. He barely touched his food and kept shooting glances at her, glances that her family picked up on and began to inquire about.

“Alright,” Viola said putting her fork down and staring at the two of them, “what’s going on? You look about as happy to be here as I was to be at the dentist’s office last week.”

“Viola’s right,” Joan agreed. “What’d you do Wyatt? Forget to get her a present?”

“No, I got her a lovely gift and gave it to her this morning…a gift that was quite expensive but which she seems to have forgotten along with her rings,” he stated.

“You’re upset because she forgot her rings?” Joan laughed. “Sure…and I don’t need any money from you ever again.”

“Where are your rings Gabby?” Viola asked.

“I guess they’re on the dressing table,” she said glancing down at her bare fingers.

“And here I thought tonight was going to be a celebration,” Sam muttered as silence followed her comment.

“I’m afraid a celebration is the furthest thing from what I’m feeling right now,” Wyatt said sending her another one of his pointed glances.

“What is that supposed to mean?” she inquired. “You’re the one who skipped the appointment, not me.”

“I was dealing withotherbusiness…seems someone close has been lying to us for a long time,” he replied.

“Really? You’re going to do this now?” she said letting her fork clatter to the plate.

“Why not? Everyone wants to know; I think they have a right to know why they’re really here.”

“Fine, tell them…I dare you to,” she threw out the challenge suddenly not caring anymore.

“Hey,” Nate said scooting his chair back slightly, “why don’t you both calm down and either clue us in or tell us to back off.”

“What sort of appointment did you miss Wyatt?” Caroline asked concerned.

“Want me to tell her?” Gabby inquired. “After all some good news might help the other go down better, that is unless you’ve changed your mind.”

“No Gabby, I haven’t changed my mind in fact your little attitude right now makes me think it’s about time to end this.”

“I completely agree,” she said pushing back her chair, getting up. “In fact, I think it’s time to end everything…”

“Gabrielle,” her mother said covering her mouth in disbelief.

“I can’t believe I ever thought I could forgive you,” Wyatt stated. “You are nothing but a lying, conniving, embezzling bitch.”

“Wyatt!” his parent’s shouted at him as he stood and loomed over her.
