“What can I say? I wasn’t going to let someone hurt my family, and I wasn’t going to trustyouafter everything that’d you’d done.”

“So you put me on the same level asGraves?” he said confused. “You set me up to destroy the man because you wanted revenge for your sister and niece?”

“Haven’t we already been through this?” she sighed. “Yeah I set you up. It was the least you deserved.”

“Gabs, from where I’m sitting you’re the one who was in the wrong,” Viola said.

“Maybe I am but I wasn’t going to let Donald get away with hurting me,” she stated.

“I thought you said he didn’t know about you,” Nate inquired.

“He didn’t, not then, but I assume he did see me at the office the day he threatened Haley because my mugging wasn’t a mugging.”

“What!?” Wyatt said turning back to her.

“Why do you think I let you find out about the ‘fake’ transfer to his company so soon after the mugging? I set you up because I couldn’t tell the police without putting Haley and Jess at risk, so I did the next best thing.”

“Wait, are you saying that the mugging was really Graves beating you up?” Sam asked.

“More like an ambush, the tire had been purposely deflated I found out, designed to get me just close enough to him and his thugs. I was changing it when one of them knocked my head into the side of the car. They grabbed my bag and me and took me to a warehouse near there after pushing my car into the river that is.”

“Jesus, Gabby, why didn’t you just come clean?” Wyatt asked.

“Because she was still protecting me,” a voice said from the doorway.

Chapter 13

“Haley!” Gabby exclaimed before she’d even turned towards her. She rushed over and hugged her as Jess came bounding in behind her flinging her arms around her leg until Gabby knelt down and hugged her tightly, the tears of worry she’d felt all day began to roll down her cheeks in relief that they were safe.

“I missed you,” Jess said snuggling up against her. “Don’t cry Aunt Gabby.”

“Please don’t cry honey,” Haley whispered to her. “I’m sorry for worrying you.”

Gabby squeezed Jess again who then saw her grandfather and wiggled out of her hold, rushing over to him. She pulled Haley away from the others and hugged her again before asking her quietly, “Why are you here?”

“Because it’s time I tell the truth…you’ve taken care of me ever since we met Gabs. It’s my turn to be the big sister; after all I am, aren’t I?” Haley told her.

“I’ve already told them,” she said sending a glance over her shoulder at the others. “There’s nothing else to tell.”

“Wow…” Nate said as Haley led her over to the table and forced her to face them.

“How did you never put them together as sisters?” Joan asked Wyatt as she stared at the two.

“We never were together in public,” Gabby answered. “Look, you know the truth…file the papers but you won’t find the money.”

“Yes he will, at least what’s left of it,” Haley stated.

“Hales, stop,” she warned her.

“You know where the money is?” Wyatt asked Haley.

“I’ve had it the entire time, Gabby didn’t know about it until the end,” Haley told him.

“She’s lying,” Gabby said. “She feels guilty because she found out where the money came from and because I’m stuck in her position.”

“What position?” Isaac inquired.

“Pregnant,” Gabby told them.
