“Yeah, see who she was talking to between six-fifteen and six-thirty. I don’t remember exactly when I got home but she was on the phone and it looked personal to me although she claimed it was the caterers.”

“On it boss,” Morris said standing to leave. The shorter span of time spent in his company these days the better, the man was like a wild cat stuck in a cage, and he certainly didn’t want to be around when his temper blew.

The door opened before he reached it and Joan walked in, pausing when she caught sight of him. The icy stare shegave him meant she was still mad about the ending of their relationship and not wanting to face any more wrath from the big man he skidded from the room without a second glance at either of the Isaacs.

“Why do you keep that ape on?” Joan inquired as the bad taste in her mouth at the sight of Morris remained.

“Because he’s the best at his job, he keeps this company’s IT department running smoothly, which keeps bringing the money in…which is what I’m assuming this visit is about,” Wyatt said picking up his briefcase as he glanced at the clock. “How much do you need today Joan?”

“For your information Wyatt Idon’tneed any cash from you. I want to know if you’ve bothered to check your messages at all, specifically the ones from Mom and Dad regarding your wife?” Joan stated.

“What’d Gabby do now?” he groaned.

“What’dGabbydo now?” Joan said incredulously. “Gabbydidn’t do anything big brother, you did…though Gabby did try and pretend you hadn’t. Mom’s petrified that she’s going to leave you.”

“What the hell are you talking about Joan? You know what? Never mind, I’m running behind as it is, if I plan on getting home in time to take Gabby to the ballet, yes I bought the damned tickets,” he said when Joan began to interrupt him. “I have to go. I don’t know what Gabby said to Mom and Dad but it was probably an exaggeration.”

“Bursting into tears when your mother-in-law asks when you’re going to start a family isn’t an exaggeration Wyatt, its pain.”

“Why on god’s green earth would our mother ask Gabby that?”

“Seriously Wyatt?” Joan asked laughing. “Mom’s been on baby watch for both of us for years. You marrying Gabby soquickly had her hopeful that you two were already expecting, and now she’s wondering if something happened to that reason?”

“Hold on, you’re saying that our mother thinks that Gabby was pregnant and that’s why I proposed?”

“Considering you swore you’d never get married for years and years and then suddenly you were announcing your engagement to Gabby…she wasn’t the only one who suspected something along those lines.”

“Gabby wasn’t pregnant, not when I proposed and certainly not now,” Wyatt assured his sister.

“Are you sure about that Wyatt? She wasn’t drinking at the party last week and maybe she’s emotional because of the hormones?” Joan suggested.

“If Gabby were pregnant she’d tell me Joan. Trust me, she’d let me know exactly how unhappy she was about it.”

“Why would getting pregnant make her unhappy?” Joan questioned blocking his way out. “No, Wyatt, tell me. What’s really going on between you and Gabby? It can’t be just your stupid comment about not wanting her to work.”

“Joan, just leave it alone.”

“I will not. You’re my brother and Gabby’s amazing. She’s the perfect sister-in-law and I don’t want to lose her, so tell me what’s going on. Why is Gabby so tense lately? If she’s not pregnant and wasn’t pregnant, then why would the notion of having a family upset her so much?” Joan inquired. Something flitted across Wyatt’s face and she caught her breath as it hit her. “Please tell me you weren’t stupid enough to cheat on her…Wyatt! You did, didn’t you?” she added when he said nothing. “You cheated on Gabby and whoever you cheated on her with is pregnant, isn’t she?”

“I didn’t cheat on Gabby, Joan,” Wyatt stated firmly.

“No? What was it a final fling before you got married? Jesus Wyatt, Gabby is the best thing that could ever have happened to you and you were stupid enough to do something like this?” Joan said turning to walk out. She turned back to face him and glared harshly. “You know what? I think I will take some money after all, I’ll take it and give it to Gabby to hire the best divorce attorney because you don’t deserve her.”

“One last time Joan, I didn’t cheat on Gabby. I don’t know why she’s upset…as you said hormones. It’s that time of the month. Just stay out of our relationship,” he demanded marching past her, “and if you even think about spreading your crazy ideas around you’ll quickly find why I’m considered a ruthless bastard. Leave Gabby alone.”

“Maybe you should be the one leaving Gabby alone,” she threw after him. Her brother was the biggest idiot in the world. She may not have been there when Gabby had gotten upset but from what her mother said it didn’t look good. She wasn’t going to sit idly by and watch her brother hurt Gabby. She’d figure out who her dumb brother had gotten pregnant and see what her story was.

“Gabby!” Wyatt shouted opening the front door. He walked into the living room, found his father sitting in his favorite recliner, and knew he was in for a lecture. “Where’s Gabby?”

“Upstairs,” he said giving him a long stare that spoke of his disappointment.

“And Mom?” Wyatt added.

“Trying to get Gabby to talk to her, would you like to explain why your wife decided to lock herself in your bedroom in order to cry her eyes out and why you can’t be bothered to answer your blasted phone? Let alone that entrance you just made. I raised you better than this Wyatt.”

“I just want to talk to Gabby,” he said heading up the stairs. “Mom…”
