Chapter8

Take that, bitch

Oriana

I took everything I purchased.

Everything.

I left the asshole with one couch and his office untouched. Not because I was being vile but because it was all technically mine. He seems to have conveniently forgotten that fact. I wonder if he even realizes it was me who paid all the bills. Yes, he is the major money earner, but I also earn a wage.

This reminds me I’ll have to find another job. Thankfully, I have saved a lot of money while we were together. Not thinking a day like this would come, but just because my mother always taught me to save.

I was able to move straight into my brother’s place. He lives alone, and he’s local, and even better, he is usually away, traveling. He takes photographs for a living, something to do with scenery.

Tonight, he’s off to Iceland of all places. It’s his favorite place to take his pictures and he is amazing at what he does. He started by taking photos of Kyler, then left him early on to do what he does now. And he hasn’t looked back.

I stand back as the mover brings the last box into my brother’s kitchen, and I cringe when I see it’s all taking up so much room. Luckily for him, he has a three-bedroom home. And while I will have one, all my stuff is about to be crammed into the second bedroom.

“How much do I owe you?” I ask the mover, and he smiles.

“All paid for, plus a big tip.” He winks before he leaves. Paid for? I reach for my phone and call Jake straight away.

“Thank you,” I say quickly before I hang up, not wanting to hear what he has to say because I don’t want to have jumbled thoughts right now.

I’ve only just left my husband, a man who I thought I would be married to forever. I guess his version of forever and mine are two entirely different things.

“Shit, how am I meant to move around in here?” Harvey asks, looking around as he enters the house with his camera slung around his neck.

“I’ll move most of it,” I tell him. My hands slide to my hips as my phone starts ringing. When I see Kyler’s face flash on the screen, I put it down on one of the boxes.

“It will get easier,” Harvey says, and I wipe away the tear that managed to escape.

“Are you sure?”

“Day by day, it will get easier.”

I take him at his word. Harvey has never lied to me, and he has experienced heartbreak. His college sweetheart died right before he was going to ask her to marry him. That’s when he quit work and started traveling.

“He doesn’t love me anymore,” I say on a sob.

“Do you still love him?” he asks. I raise my brows at him. “Don’t shoot me, but have you seen yourself lately? Neither of you looks happy around the other. Like it’s a chore. It’s been like that for years, O, and I can’t even remember the last time I saw you two kiss on the lips instead of his usual kiss on the cheek.” I sit on the floor, releasing a heavy breath. “All I’m saying is you gave up so much for that man. It’s time to start living for you for a change. Don’t fall victim to loving someone so much you change who you are meant to be.”

“I don’t know who that person is anymore.” I turn my tear-filled eyes to him.

“Maybe not today, but you will.” He kisses the top of my head and walks to his room, climbing over the boxes as he goes.

My phone rings again, and this time I take a breath and answer it.

“Come back. I wasn’t thinking right,” Kyler says.

I close my eyes and let my head fall to the box in front of me as I listen to him breathing through the phone. “I can’t,” I reply on a broken whisper. “I can’t.”

“You can. Come back. Please. It was a mistake. I don’t want anyone but you,” he begs.

“You do, though, Kyler, and that’s okay. We’ve changed.”

“Oriana.”
