I laughed. "Actually, I was thinking of having some people over."

"Oh, to the new fancy flat?"

"Yeah. I want to meet his friends and see who his people are. I met his cousin, Gabe. But he has friends; I just never see them. I don't know where he goes when he's not on duty."

She lifted a brow. "Uh-oh, does he require investigation? Because you know I stay ready to cyber-stalk guys at the drop of a hat.”

"Your skills are admirable, but he knows his way around a computer."

"I doubt he can out hack me. I can find out everything about him."

"Maybe we put that on the back burner that for now. I’ll try and, you know, get him to talk to me like normal adults."

She sighed and opened her notebook as our professor walked in. "God, if you're going to insist on being mature about it..."

"What am I going to do with you?"

"I don't know. Love and adore me? But it wouldn't hurt you to know something about him, because right now, all you know is that he works for your dad, and that's not exactly a glowing endorsement."

She was right. She was very, very right.

"Thanks for the offer. Seriously though, I don't need to access his past. I don't care about that."

And I meant it. Really. I didn't want to know his backstory. What I did care about was if he was lying to me now or not.

"I don't want to go behind his back. I just... I want to know him, and he keeps so much locked in, you know?"

"You know I get it. My boyfriend is heading off to Norway. I'm convinced he has another girlfriend."

I rolled my eyes. "Please, Adam adores you. You can tell by the way he stares at you like you walk on water. He just fucked up. Talk to him. Cold shoulders aren't going to fix it."

She sniffed. "It might make me feel better though. Being petty does have its purpose."

"If it's actually making you feel better, then I endorse it. But I don't think it is."

She rolled her eyes. "Fine, there you go being mature again."

"Speaking of mature, I have a dinner party this weekend with his friends. Maybe I can pump his friends for information. I just want to know something about him, okay?"

"I will help you come up with probing questions."

"Of course, I would expect nothing less."

Just as our professor instructed everyone to open up our notes from last week's class on compliance, a text came in.

AMELIA: We need to meet.

If I was the prince of hacking, then Phineas Devlin was its god.

I sat back and listened as Phineas described how he was able to clean the security footage from the mansion where the gala was held.

"So you'll see here, we've got cameras in that room."

My stomach roiled watching Montgomery hold Nissa tightly in place as she struggled. Igno tracked interest in her. There was no sound, but we could tell when the chaos ensued. There was a bright flashing pop outside, then everything went south.
