I leaned forward as I watched the playback.

Holy shit.

I almost didn't see it, but Nissa had put something under the table.

What the hell was that?

"Rewind that again please. What the hell did she just do?"

Phineas nodded, his eerie silvery gray gaze landed on mine. "You caught that too? Likely planting a bug."

I cursed under my breath. I was slipping. Why hadn’t she told me what she was doing? Had she done this for her father? For Interpol? She promised me she wouldn’t go running off half-cocked. This was worse. It was downright dangerous.

Gabe smirked at me, and I wanted to slap the expression off his face. "You have something to say?"

"Nope. Just surprised at you getting bested by an asset."

"I didn't get bested."

He smirked again and shrugged. "If you say so."

When Gabe and I finished our exchange, Phineas continued his presentation, and it was the last frame that we all focused on. Nissa wasn't the only Montgomery up to something in that meeting.

When all the men in the room panicked and tried to get Igno out, Julian, did something with his phone. It was right next to Igno’s. And something flashed on the screen.

"What the fuck was that?" I asked

Lock chimed in. "It looks like some kind of download or something."

I leaned in close to Devlin. “Can you pull in tighter? As soon as Montgomery walks in?”

He did, but I didn’t see anything. “Nothing.”

“Okay, fast forward. That part where he approaches. What’s happening there?” There had to be something.

Devlin leaned forward, cleaned up the video, then whistled low. “Holy shit, do you see that?” He pointed at the screen, and we all had to squint.

I saw it next, Montgomery’s hands in his pockets, then a light. It was the accompanying light on Igno’s phone that tipped me off. “Holy shit, he’s cloning it.”

Gabe cursed under his breath. “How much you want to bet the cipher to decode the ledger is on his phone?”

“That means Montgomery has both. He’s making a play for Igno’s seat.

Saff nodded. “No way Igno let’s that happen without bloodshed.”

Gabe nodded. "Your girlfriend is in a heap of trouble, and she has no idea she’s walked into a power play."

We needed our hands on that ledger. Igno thought Montgomery had put it away for safe keeping with Nissa, but I knew him better than that. He’d want to look at it every day. "I need to get it back in the house."

Nissa

I rushed to the library that afternoon with my shadow in tow, happy that this guard kept a good distance, didn't bother me, didn’t ask questions, and provided no disturbances.

Immediately, I missed Westin. Having someone there to confide in would have made all of this easier to deal with, no matter what Amelia had to say.

When I reached the assignment room, as I’d come to think of it, Amelia nodded at me in greeting as I asked, "What's the emergency?"

"Have a seat."
